Question Replacing turn signal switch

My high beam switch is fubar'd and my high beams don't turn off. I bought a new switch and am planning on replacing it this weekend. Any advice before I journey down this road? Thanks.

fubar'd? ......anyway I've done this a couple of times , it's straightforward , make a note of any wires (ie for the horn that you disconnect) , also mark the position of the steering wheel on the steering column splines.)

Fubard: F***'d up beyond all reasonable doubt. Yankee colloquialism.

A dab of paint or nail polish is handy to mark the position of the nut on the spline, too.

As with any electrical related work...disconnect the battery. I forgot to to this once and nearly fried my main harnesss while working on my dash wiring (I may have even been replacing my turn signal switch!) that nearly fried my harness when removing the light switch.

my $.02.

Nate:

I too recently completed this on my 88 Carrera. Be warned, there are three wires that need to be connected to the headlight switch. It's best to remove this switch from the dash and let it drop down. This will allow you to disconnect and reconnect the wires pretty easily. To remove the headlight switch, you will have to take off the ****. First remove the rubber from the front of the switch with a small screw driver. This is necessary to get to the nut that holds the **** on. Then remove the nut. Be careful, use a needle nose pliers to hold the switch's shaft in order not to ruin the dimming capability. Once this is complete, you'll need to use a pair of snap ring pliers to remove the disc that pulls the switch through the dash (and holds it tight). The rest is pretty straight foward. Good Luck!

I'm assuming that you're talking about once the switch has been removed, where the wires terminate into the back of the head light switch. I think you will probably have to remove the switch so that you can read the back of it. I just replaced the wires as I pulled the old ones out and ended up doing the whole thing by feel. Might want to check your local dealer or see if someone has the PAR with the wiring diagram.

Thanks Nate, the sad thing is I do have a wiring diagram for my 77 but the wires aren't matching up A friend from Pelican emailed me a picture of the rear of his light switch so that settles that now I just have to figure out where the other wires go, I am hopeful

Thanks for the reply

Hi,

I'm struggling to replace the dip/beam switch, and though I thought I was being carfuel when replacing the wires to the headlight switch, I wasn't.

Can anyone provide a wiring diagram, picture or even a description of which wire(s) goes where, starting at the unswitched 12V (red wire) on the twin post marked 30. The two wires I'm struggling with are the grey/black from the dip switch, which seems to piggy back onto the thinner grey/black from the loom. But which terminal on the light switch does it then go? Of course this assumes the other wires are correct.

Many thanks in advance,

Jon

Typical, As soon as you ask for help (I got my wife out of bed to double check my work - well, she did rewire our house), things become a lot clearer. Problem solved.

I'd recommend removing the light switch before doing this, as access is so tight. My problems started when I had to remove some loom wires, to gain access to the ones I was replacing.

Changed the signal/Highbeam stalk today, very easy job, make sure you drop the headlamp switch so you can see where the wires go.

Maybe an hour job, tops.

I will post details if anyone needs them.

Hello all,

Funny thing, my hi beam switch needs to be replaced also. Where is the best place to get the replacement part? How much did you guys spend on the part?

Thanks

My high beams have started to come on by themselves lately so I suspect the turn signal/high/low beam switch to be defective also.
Since my driving is done exclisively in the city and I never use my high beams, is there a way to simply disable the high beams from functioning as opposed to replacing the switch assembly?
Can I just pull the high beam fuses?
