Question Could it be CV Joints on a '82 SC

I am starting to experience a not so settling noise on my 1982 911SC.

The car has about 85,000 original miles on it.

When the car is in an easy forward motion the noise does not exist. When one puts the accelerator to the carpet, a "knocking" noise from the rear becomes evident. Meaning that it only appears under load. It does not appear to be a factor of RPM, so I think that it has nothing to do with the engine. I do not experience this when rounding corners.

Any Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Thanks.

Well I was going to chime in and say drive shafts when I saw the post but as the problem doesn't occur on corners it is less obviously them . However over many years I've had two drive shafts replaced , one knocked on corners , the other didn't . The sound is unmistakeable once correctly identified , a loud 'clunking' describes it aptly I think .
Look under there and see if the gaiters are split . Sometimes they can be cleaned and greased packed in the gaiters and all is well .

Am I to assume that the "gaiters" are the boots?

Its a broken stud. Bottom of number 6. My wrench is telling me is is probably a corrosion problem as the car came from NC originally. The rest of the car has no rust. I'm stumped.

$2,500 to $3,000

Now what?

I know what has to happen, is there anything else I should be looking at while we are there.

since it looks like you're gonna redo the heads now is the time to add Carrera tensioners if it hasn't been done.

I'd be thinking (or DOING!) 964 or webcam 20/21 swap with a cat bypass!

those have already been done.

About the studs, The 101 project book says not to use the Dilavar stud. Use steel.

ANY INPUT?

I replaced all 12 lower dilivar studs with steel ones. Cost around $300 in parts, labor was free. I had two broken studs #1,#6. The engine had 107,000 miles on it when I did it. I replaced the studs, new gaskets and put it all back together. Now that the headstuds are fixed, I am going for the record on miles before a rebuild.

Free Labor!
You are a lucky man. I wish I could do the job, but I just do not have the experience.
