Default Valuation question - mid '80s Targa

I was offered an '84 or '85 Targa and finally had a chance to look at it today. Hopefully my findings are sufficient to determine a ballpark figure should I decide to pursue it further.

The car is stored in a barn, had a mediocre repaint in original metallic black, and was driven no more than 500 miles in the last 7 years - according to the owner. He's owned the car since the late '80s, and is waffling between making it roadworthy or just selling it.

Aesthetically, the repaint was pretty bad, with numerous peeling areas. The seats looked fine but the interior was simply messy and obviously not loved.
All tires were relatively new, and the Fuchs were in remarkably good shape. The car also had a period-correct wing.

After some time on a charger, the old beast roared to life, smoke billowing from below. It settled into a decent idle but has a rusted-through muffler.
So I drove it. It drove like an ox cart. Seriously. The brakes felt like something from an abused Trabant, the steering was not confidence-inspiring, and the shifter was horrific. I'm biased with my tight & precise 993 transmission, but this was just bad. The shifter was all over the place and it was impossible to get the car into 2nd without compliments from the transmission.

A short drive convinced me to keep the drive short...

The engine was wearing at least half of its oil capacity on the outside of the case. All in all, I'd say the body was solid with no real evidence of rust, and a good cleaning would do wonders. So, armed with this bare-bones description, is there a price range that could be applied to such an example?

Thank you in advance.

Sounds like a semi-POS. Assuming no major mechanicals, just shifter bushings, some gaskets/seals, etc, I'd not go over $8K, maybe 10 upon detailed inspection, even if it is a Carrera. A so-so to decent paintjob will be $3-5K alone. Sorry, but I'm not driving a 911 with a ****ty paintjob. I'd not be surprised to spend $2-3K in other bits to do R&R. Again, this is independent of major mech issues, tires or interior. Get us some pics.

Unless you find out it IS an '84. Then, it is worth a minumum of $35K.

PS- my 911 gives up nothing in prowess or capability to the 993, so the drive quality is not how it should be.

You will spend 12-15,000 on the car to get it where you would be seen driving it. New paint, rebuild, drive line, brakes, fuel delivery, interior, targa top, lenses, rubber, exhaust system. . .

Does this do anything for you? I am looking for a 88-89 560SL and will put this one up for sale. It is well sorted with a blueprinted 1967 sand-cast block punched to 2.7. Custom Bilstens coil-overs, Euro ride hight, original paint. Just a beautiful car.

A number of points here. "If you have to ask" (how much), you can't afford it. I generally agree w. Ed, but I think he is light on his cost estimates for htis one. 'Plink', I'm not in the market, but I'll be interested to see what you ask when it comes time; it is a beauty. Are you sure you want to trade the nimbleness of the P-car for boat-like qualities of the Merc? It ain't even close to a sports car.

Vracer,
I have a 930, my wife has been bugging me to get her something to drive as a toy and she likes the 560. I have just over25k in my Targa, I hope to get around 20 for it. I also have the original 911S Mag block. It really is a great car, Stephen Kaspar blueprinted and built all of it. As you know, it is a completely different car than the 930.

Well now that we see pictures, that "911SC" badge on the decklid brings it back to an '83 at the newest. Which really isn't much of a difference. But something like this will need months worth of hours of effort to bring it back. Not to mention dollars. And in a completely different way than you've spent on your 993............

Have an accurate mileage?

And on further viewing, the foglights are an other SC giveaway.

Ken,
Now, now - I'm simply keeping the 993 fresh.

I believe the car has 125,000 miles on the clock.

Offer 'em $5K and go to 6 if you want it bad enough.

Ed,
Based on my initial inspection of the car, I'd say $5k is generous. I'll speak with the owner again soon, but I'm certainly not chomping at the bit.
