Tom,
I also have a 1987 911 that I've owned for a year and a half. My buddy and I just charged it up with R134 a few weeks ago. Worked good for about a week, worked fair for a couple more weeks, then it worked poor when I drove to Savannah last weekend...
From what I've read these cars just do not have an efficient AC system from the factory. However, there are companies out there who are filling the need to provide complete AC replacement kits. They are relatively expensive, but if you have to have it... I've learned to live without it since my car is really just a weekend toy.
Some names that come to mind are Rennaire, Retro Air, and Griffith. Do a search here and on Pelican and you'll find lots of information.
As by buddy Ralph said "you don't have an air conditioner, you have a marginal dehumidifier".

I have a 1987 coupe for about a few months. When I got it, the A/C was supposedly working as per PPI and as everybody says, "don't expect too much"
I took the car in to my own Indy and he brought the car up to "his and my" specs and one thing was recharging the A/C. So far, the A/C blows very cold, I don't even set it to the coldest and the fan is in the middle. Hopefully this will last.
It has been converted to R134 but no idea if it is the original converted or a complete retrofit.
