Found abused '72 911E- Now what, buy and fix it?
I came across a black uncared for and goofy looking 911E yesterday ...in this part of the world that is a very rare occurence, one can hardly see any aircooled cars whatsoever because of a law limiting imports older than 7 years.
Car has been awfully repainted in black (originally light yellow), and has rust spots here and there on the fenders, front windscreen border and chrome, door mirrors are horrible, but the interior seems original to the best of my limited knowledge, dashboard and gauges are ok but might need fixing, rear seats, roof liner and passenger seat are ok too. Driver seat leather needs work. Floor pan seems solid.
Engine is running and has been updated to a 2.7 according to the owner, I have not had the chance to check the engine number as I had a flight to catch. I saw it has carburators though. He recently installed the wrong clutch on it apparently, so it is not disengaging properly. He mentioned black smoke coming out of the exhaust occasionally, I am guessing it is a an overly rich mixture.
911E seem to have some appreciating value, I am not looking to do an investment, however it would be nice to know you have made a good deal and have a keeper.
Body shop work and labor is inexpensive here, I can get it professionally stripped down, treated and repainted beautifully for around $3k usd.
Questions:
Is this car worth investing any time and money on, to restore it to good condition? Can more expert eyes see something grossly wrong with it?
Should I go RS conversion like J.Olsen's gorgeous car instead of restoring to original condition?
Any comments and point of vue are appreciated.
Thanks

if you have the means and the time it would be worth getting and doing IMO. Very rare op and not much money going in...what's to loose? $5-6k that's a clutch job on your 993..nothing...
you might get into it and change your mind, you might go stock, you might go clone, but get the car and THEN consider what top do...worst case you back out and sell it...best case you have the car of your dreams for Sunday trip through the valley
Send pics of the POS!!
(keep in mind rebuilding can cost 10's of thousands of $$$$$ many 10's!

Thanks for the comments so far.
Ok step 1 is done, I already put a downpayment for the car and will take posession once I am back there in the country in a couple of days.
Following some internet research, I think it is not in such a bad shape afterall compared to similarily aged models. Found some worse examples on the net for 2-3 times the price.
I guess my question is, given that '72 911E seem to be appreciated by enthusiasts, and also appreciating in value, should I pay my respects to it and only do limited changes that would bring it to a restored condition rather than going full fledge RSR look? I am thinking along the lines of Olsen's car above, or this one by Paul Stephens.. Excluding the large diameter wheels.
PU911RSR........That Autofarm conversion is beautiful..I know the outfit in the UK, they are good people.
I am planning to put another ~15k USD on this car. A proper RSR look conversion might put me in the 25k USD range (excluding car price)..
BTW I have a twin-turbocharged 1974 911 with stock looking 993TT body, and also the 993"GT2" in the avatar (997GT2 avatar is gone ) so I don't really crave for more frankensteins

Given the cars you already have, I think it would be neat to try and make this one a stock restoration. It would be a nice alternative experience, to be able to replicate the vintage feel and driving experience of a '72 E.

Im more of the RS type camp... in white and blue. Have a great time with this build, its all part of the experience of owning.... well you already know that. Would love to see some pics of the build.

Three Wheelin'
It's really your call, but if you choose the "stock" road, I recommend pulling the E block and drop in a later model 2.7 (or larger), heavy duty clutch and suspension.

Thank you all..some of you are vicious!!
Wow nice collection of gorgeous pictures! Thank you!
I have looked at these over and over again every free minute I had trying to make up my mind. I am obviously inclined to go the wild racer direction, as I have always done in the past.. I would summarize the options as follows:
1- All out boy racer
2- 2.8RSR look
3- Slightly wider deep-dish wheels with RS fenders look but no ducktail
4- Stock look, just lowered with an “S” front spoiler.
I called the controversial Japanese firm Rauh Welt to explore two of their options (see pics below), They don’t ship kits, the would fly over for 4 days and do the installation on-site including wheels and 930 suspension. Estimated cost excluding paint or any other work $24k.
I particularily like this option below, but probably without the ducktail..
However…I cannot but think that I could start with any other newer car for those conversions instead of this rather rare 1972 911E, as the engine also would need to go hand in hand with the bodywork, regardless whether I race it or not. The 2.7 engine is just not up to it and would need serious $$$.
My other 1974 twin turbo might be a better option as a base for one of these sexy conversions.
I am leaning towards a more conservative look…RS fenders, with deeper dish wheels than stock, a lowered stance, front spoiler, and no rear ducktail.. I believe it would look something like this below..I find those wheels to have the right offsets and depth and the ride height is just perfect!
Finally, last option is keeping it stock except minor cosmetic changes (mirrors, lowered stance and some chrome) like the beauty below..
I am leaning most towards option 3 above so far, with option 4 right after it..I somehow feel I have to keep this car with a stockish look..
Sorry to keep this going, I am flying tomorrow night back, and will get a chance to see the car a bit more than the 3 minutes I did before, and assess the work to be done. I will take some better shots too.
Thank you all.
