Proper gauge readings on carrera
I'm going to look at a 84 911 tomorrow, hopefully, and I have been using the search function here and have gotten a lot of useful information however one thing I'm still not positive of is what the proper readings on the gauges should be i.e. oil pressure etc. as I realise the gauges read a little different than other cars. It's an 84 n/a 87k on it I'm wondering what to look for on the gauges hot and cold. Thanks in advance.

That is a hard question to answer. The oil related gauge levels will vary until the car is warm. You may consider 180F warm, and the oil level should read halfway or so. The oil pressure should read around 1 bar when warm, and rise to around 4 bar or so at 3k+ rpm.

Every 911 is a little different, use the dipstick until you correlate it to how the oil level gauge reads.
911 oil level should be checked when warm, on level ground with the motor running.
when driving, the gauge will go down to the red, do not panic, that is normal for all 911s.
Pressure (Druck) will go up with RPMs, and down at idle.

My thought process is when I look at a car and test drive it I always check the oil pressure and it reads in psi so I know to look for roughly 40p.s.i at idle and an increase as rpm's climb and something with say 10 p.s.i. is a red flag so I'm just trying to figure out what would be a red flag on a 911 gauge since they don't read in p.s.i.

just a guess...the owner will be with you?
ask him to explain what you are seeing, if he confidently points out stuff and explains what will happen and when, he knows the car...if he fumbles about and says, i never look at those things - well that tells you someting also
If someone was driving my car I would point everything out and explain why it is what it is and the proof supporting the numbers (esp regarding oil level indicator....that one can throw newbies for a while)

Thanks for the help guys you gave me some good ideas of what to look for and ivangene I like your idea its very important to see what the owner knows about the car.

What the owner knows about the car is relative (only) to what you know about Porsches. Hopefully, this forum will help you...
Certainly discuss his oil change intervals (even, oil selection...THAT should bring up some discussion, should he be "knowing")...oil consumption, etc...he should speak quickly to these notes should he be an avvid Porsche owner. Talk about ANY original parts that have been changed out...you can surmise much just speaking of brake lines, fuel lines, etc..... The Service History should be at your beckoning call.......
BUT, above ALL else, a good PPI from a reputable shop (not his) would be highly recc'd.

Checked out the car today cosmetically it was decent but it ran very rough. Idle was very low and erractic and had slight popping so that turned me off. Owner had car checked out and mechanic said this was due to the valves needing adjustment. He dosen't have any history or receipts for the valves being adjusted.

...man those valves would have to be WAY out of adjustment and why wouldnt the owner have them adjusted, and why would some mechanic say that.....this isnt sounding good my friend - popping could be SO many things, as could idle....i would have your own mechanic look at it if you are still interested in it
