Do not start it up!

If the fan is hitting the fan shroud, tighten the bolts opposite of where it's hitting and the fan will be centered. Re-check fan clearance w feeler gauge after installing the belt.

Ok problem solved. The new voltage regulator sits lower than the old VR I pulled out. That caused the bolts to rub the backside of the fan thus the resistance. I installed a spacer and now it spins.

I am glad I checked with you guys. I am wiped for the day and will button things up in the morning.

Hammers are a part of any mechanic's toolbox. I don't think I've ever seen any mechanic that's ever needed to use one.

I've got a small machinist hammer, a large Ball Peen, a couple of dead blows, a 3lb sledge, then the BFH. All have found a place in my adventures over the past decade. Oh, yes, I have some claw hammers for carpentry.

I scowl real hard and then with a clawlike hand, I emanate the "Force" and sheer willpower to drive out rollpins, bearing races, the wedge pins on the Lemforder balljoints, and the stubborn stub axle on the rear wheel hubs.

And when that doesn't work I say fuch it, and get out the hammer collection.

So far, the only time I used a hammer (soft) was to "assist" with bubble removal within my calipers.

Fore sure: helped.

BEST!

What for? Your regulator is doing what it should.

The 13.4V engine off must be after just shutting the engine off. Battery voltage at rest is usually 12.65 to 12.85 for a flooded lead acid battery.

And 14.4V is spot on at a temperature of 80 F for a flooded lead acid battery.

You may just have had a faulty battery.

Place an acid neutralizing Battery Mat under the next battery.

Ok I got the fan and everything back in. The last issue I am having trouble with is I can't get a tight tension on the alternator belt to save myl life. I have adjusted, readjusted and then some. I followed the Bentley manual with adjusting the shims but it is almost like the fan it sitting just a little too low because there is about 1/4" slack between the belt and the pulley.

Any suggestions?

me scared

I have heard getting the fan to seat correctly is very important - if your belt was OK before and now is not....I would start wondering if it was always wrong or if I messed up...believeing I had messed up I would remove and re-install the fan

Same belt, and your a 1/4" loose?

I agree with Ed. You need to start retracing your steps. Also assuming you don't have all the shims between the pulley halves.

I am done for this weekend and will take a fresh look next weekend. The alternator belt looks a little rough so I need to put the new one in.

I did remove the AC belt on the reinstall which I did not need to do when I originally removed the fan. I will retrace from the beginning and will let you guys know if I get stuck.

Thanks for working with me on this. This does take a lot of patience.

Like IXLR8 said I don't think I have an alternator or even VR problem but since I was in there I might as well replace what is common to fail.

2 weekends now and I still can't drive her! Oh well I hope to ger her going next weekend.

Try rebuilding an engine. 2 weeks is nothing in the grand scheme.
