Default HEATER CABLE

My '84 Targa's auto heat gave up and I decided to replace the controls with the manual style. Went to detach the cable from the control lever and ?????
How do you remove that twisted cable from the lever? A diagram seems to show a one piece line with a twist in the center. How do you get that into the hole??!! Thanks

If the cable is not broken, then you're best leaving it alone, such is the pita factor on them.

Thanks for the reply. How can I introduce the cable into the hole in the lever by the hand brake handle?
Is the non-auto cable different from the auto heat one?

I don't honestly know. I have the manual heat, and to hook the wire to the lever, you have to un-wind the loop, then re-wind it. The whole thing including the levers and friction discs all have to be disassembled. I've done it a few times, and this is one job that I hate.

Thanks again1 I'll dig into it in a day or so. I'll let you know how it came out. Not looking too good with some tight clearances.

You have to remove the center console, both seats, and the center carpet in addition to the heater console before you can access the tunnel hole.

LOL - I have taken all that out but never looked at the hearer cables...i think the e-brake part is just 4 screws and it comes off...the wires are long enough or have a connection just to the rear (near coupler access) I can shoot a pic of the "exposed areas" but have my e-brake box back on...

Let me know how it goes.

My drivers side heater cable snapped 4 years ago and I have not had a chance to replace it. (not on my priority list)

I probably do not need it anyway since I get plenty of heat just from the passenger side.

Not that I need it right now but I've got heat! I finally gave up and followed RUSNAK's advice and removed the seats-much easier! Rather than install separate cables I simply ran a bolt through the lever ends and the loop in the cable. Levers don't operate independently but... I was not going to pull out the cable to remove the auto heat lever so I Dremeled a channel into the lever to release the cable.
I never could access a diagram (PDF problems) so I'm still curious to know if the two cables simply go into the holes in the levers or if there is a more involved attachment. Oh well, at least I'll have an extended driving season coming up. Thanks to everyone who responded!

I've driven 911's in single digit temps and have melted my feet when the heat works as designed. It's a decent enough system ('80's era ones anyway) for most any climate. Good to hear yours is working to help extend the driving season!

The cables are acutally springy wire. The ends twist like bread loaf ties, and you have to take the levers out to change them without bending or binding them, which is a pain.
