Default Looking for my first 911

hi all,

I googled this car and didn't find any more info. Is the owner on thus forum? Has anyone checked it out? I live over an hour north and just want to get as mug info before I go check it out.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/ctd/2456232317.html

Looks pretty nice, wondering about mileage on trans and motor, also how finicky are those 6 webber carbs? Worth it over the injection equivalent?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Sage

That would be a scary first Porsche if there isn't a mountain of receipts, but it could be a heck of a lot of fun. There is no rear interior and my guess is that it was a track toy based on the cut out roll bar, turned tachometer, and rear wheels. Go check it out.

Any chance you are in Sonoma?

.....and welcome to Rennlist.

Sage,

The car looks interesting and my best advice is to have a thorough PPI done by a long-hood expert before you make an offer.

Been for sale (consignment) there for at least 3 months now. I think it started at $25900.

As Steve says, one of us who KNOWS the torsion bar era cars is a must to look it over.

Nothing particularly finicky about 40/46 IDAs. IF they're up to snuff. Someone with actual experience running a carb'd car on E10 gas let us know how that's working out? Been almost 15 years since I had the 3.5L 46IDA equipped engine in the old track rat.

The main thing about Webers (there are two three barrel carbs) is that over time the throttle shafts wear, letting extra air into the combustion chambers. This makes for poor idle, which can be covered up with extra rich fuel mixture. Agree with above about a PPI, and especially make sure the shop understands Webers. "Carb guys" are getting harder to find. No other particularly challenging mechanical issues. Rust is a big deal with these cars, so it must be put on a rack and closely inspected.

if you act fast you might catch this one -

might treat you better as a first P-car...get you aclimated before jumping into something that could cost a lot to keep running

The 69 is definately the deep end of the pool for a first Porsche and you need to heed the advice of those that have posted already. That's a lot of experience and knowledge talking. The 85 looks like a good deal and will offer more modern conveniences. It's amazing how seductive the long hoods are, almost like a siren on the rocks luring you in to the rocky shoreline. When sorted, the early cars are a blast to drive and offer a very different driving experience.

As a newbie myself, I recommend you drive as many different cars and models as you can and have a real budget which needs to include reasonable reserves to fix the issues uncovered in any pre-purchase inspection.

Good luck with your search and it helps to add your location to your profile so those in your area can offer assistance and local knowledge.

Thank for all the great thoughts guys! Yes, I live in Santa rosa, north bay. I was an ASE cert tech for brakes and suspension, worked on BMW mercedes and landrover mostly. This isn't my first Porsche (cayenne s ) and I have done all my own work on all the cars I have owned. I daily drove a 240sx with 800 spring rates and stripped to around 2200lbs, and loved it except for the mundane motor and understeer. So I have no problem with a stripped down, noisy car.

Yes, I admit the longnose has a certain draw in the looks department. I love the 964 and 964 turbo, and the 73 replica or era longnose cars. Just gorgeous!

The car won't be daily driven, but won't be a track ray either. Just a bit of both. Not looking to spend $50k on a restored car, but don't want a parts car or car in parts either. And I wouldnt mind having a few performance mods done already, like that card has, brakes, suspension, cage, etc. How reliable are those 2.7s anyways? I remember reading about frequent expensive rebuilds...

I know a guy who worked for Porsche training technician in the us during the 60's,he owned a porsche dealership and I helped him rebuild a 356 spider, but I didn't help with the motor work and I know that car is more closely related to a bug than a 911. I do plan on driving as many cars as possible before deciding, I've already driven a 996 and enjoyed it but not much steering feel and very muted, although miles ahead of my is350.

Anyone in the north bay or bay area willing to give me a ride to sway my opinion one way or the other?
