Frustrating Event
Had a frustrating event this morning during the drive into work. In a residential area, I was in my Civic Si daily driver following a slower car doing the speed limit of 35mph. A 996 convertible came up quickly and starting riding my tail a bit. I gave him a little brake to send the message to "back off" and he then passed me and the other car on a double yellow line. I uttered a few choice words and tried to let it go.
But it was frustrating in that I had to deal with the jerk but I had to witness another example of why people think that Porsche drivers are arrogant, aggressive drivers. I've had my 911 for less than a year but the more I drive it the more I realize that the classic car owners tend to be driven by sane people and that some (not all) of the the later model 996, 997 drivers tend to fit the "profile". I'm not trying to offend 996/997 owners or make a broad generalization but I do see it.
When I drive the 911 I really make an effort to not tail, cut people off, speed in busy areas, etc. Porsches are made for fast, spirited driving but not stupid driving. Just wanted to vent to group that can relate.

Down here in GA,..I get all kinda' stuff that I'd rather not deal with......especially on the Interstate, with people right up your **** while cruising at 80 MPH....especially in Atlanta.

Geez amber lamps what story. My encounter wasn't road rage to that degree just stupid driving and attitude.
Doyle you're right about aggressive driving here in Atlanta... it's the norm. But crossing double yellow lines is a pet peeve. Crotch rocket motorcycles drive like they have license to cross.

Yes,..the double yellow is a pet peeve of mine, as well. I do consider myself "safe" (don't we all,..all of the time), certainly, as you would. A passing lane or passing line,..geeze,..go for it. BUT: a doubleline or tailgating? THAT'S another story. I've called out several drivers over my 38 years driving,..it's never pretty,..especially down here with the trucks, as well......so many stories.
For now (as I get older), it's a matter of preservation of personal longevity (mine). The older I get, the better I was,....I'm now understanding what this means,..and try to NOT let my instinctive emotions (replies) take over while traveling down the road AT SPEED and encountering a bit of Darwin's mutations...(stationary would be another matter,..as I do believe in "selection").......
As to motorcycles, it's a no win........this, I've learned for sure......especially the fast ones.....and the riders who know how to handle the bikes......very dangerous, however.
I've tried something a bit different recently, as to tailgaters......[[[[[the brake engagement is ASKING for further trouble (contact-wise),..with light tapping for the visuals being more common-place.]]]] I (now) will quickly swerve L/R a few times (within my lane, of course) while pointing in the rearview mirror at the offender..(one could add brake lights to suite taste).......it's worked in 3 cases thus far......I think I'm gonna' stay with this,.
I'll never forget Doug's post on his trek,...man-o-man......we run in the "gun" approach circle down here,..licensed to carry,...all above board....as one must prep for a real, true Neanderthal-type in a worst-case situation.

I'm not going to condone what he did, but I believe you made it worse by trying to "send him a message" with your brakes. Doing something like that can easily make an already aggressive driver really pissed off for sure. If he's on your *** to begin with, he obviously doesn't give a hoot about what you think anyway. Best to ignore him.

Sorry just cant agree with the OP comment. Nothing to do with people are different about 996 owners and clasic car owners , jerks in both worlds. Its just that there arent as many classic cars around .. or left. there are a gazillion 996 and 997 so the chances of seeing it are higher ... I am sure in 1980 -90 lots of SCs and Carreras crossed double yellow lines.
As far as the double yellow line goes , if its your pet peeve its you pet peeve , get over it . In Canada and you may find in your own jurisdicrion cossing a double yellow line is not illegal .it is a commonly held belief that it is but in fact it is not. ( Doesnt mean it is not a moronic thing to do thogh ) Now if there is a sign that tells you not to cross the double yellow . NOW it is illegal .. the citation would be for disobeying the sign.
This thread should relly just be anohter OT thread about aggresive moronic drivers and have nothing to do with the car they drive or the generation of it ..
,,,just sayin'

iceman, I agree with your feedback about newer vs classic pcars. I was just pissed seeing another 911 driver fit the mold of being a jerk driver. Stupid drivers drive all types of cars.
Crossing double yellow is a pet peeve because I got ticketed for crossing a yellow to get around backed up traffic to get into a left hand turn lane. The cop said they were ticketing to stop near head on collisions (and to generate city revenue). Crossing double yellow to pass a driver going the speed limit is against the law in my jurisdiction.

A jerk is a jerk, they come in all all shapes, sizes and cars...
Last weekend I was cruising down a 2 lane back road at the speed limit in my Cayenne, I had the wife, kid and dog with me.
A Police car comes up behind me and proceeds to tailgate me for a good 2-3 miles... you have NO idea how bad I wanted to brake check this ***..
He than passes me over the double yellow line and I have to back off to make sure he does not hit the oncoming car. A fine example of driving.

I don't think anyone here is trying to "fix" anything.....just sharing their stories and experiences.....it's always good to remind all not to engage this braking thing on a tailgater...electrons are VERY abundant!
