Default Purchase a car with broken odometer?

Hi all,

I'm looking at a few cars at the moment. One of the possibilities has 136K on it. But, the odometer broke at 99K. The owner purchased and installed a new odometer at that time so now the new odometer reads 35K.

The seller has the original odometer that will go with the car - not that it really matters.

The car is very clean. Of course I would have a thorough PPI done, but what headaches am I looking at regarding the odometer issue? Am I going to run into Title issues? Should I walk away even if it's a very clean car at a good price?

The car is Venetian Blue/Gray. It is a coupe w/tail.

Also, what would be a good price based on a favorable PPI?

thanks in advance --

JC

What year is the car? That will help gauge value.

you can send it to NHW speedo and have them set the odo to a more appropriate milage and or fix the broken one

$130 to repair includes shipping IIRC

broken odo is common - mine broke.... for a while

I can't speak for the value, but I wouldn't worry about the the mileage.

I'm not sure about "newer" models, but I know on my '83 the speedo will slide right out of the dash and the wires feeding the odometer can be easily disconnected. As mentioned above, lots of these speedos broke over the years and have been replaced. I was replacing mine when I learned just how vulnerable the odometers are in these cars. I wouldn't put much faith in the mileage on any of them, absent lots of documentation.

Ok - but what does this mean regarding the Title? If the car has a new(er) odometer reading 36K I would think I would run into issues getting it titled in GA.

That's simply BS. I know of few cars that have mileage discrepancies.
My '84 is clocking nicely at 140k+. Sure, people lose a gear here or there, but most are **** enough to fix promptly.

To the original poster-most states will have a form to note the correction. Just don't pay stratosphere $ for the car.

regarding title....

are they going to inspect the car to transfer title?
was the ODO replaced and noted on the DMV somewhere?
if not...lie - just write it has 110K miles on the transfer and dont even make mention of it...

In TX, the ODO is exempt if the car is older than 10 years. I'm not sure about GA, but that may be the case.

I'd not lie. That is where problems will occur. If I understand it correctly, it has 35 showing, which would throw a flag for me. I've seen cars with a note in Carfax relating to a DMV ammendment. If you do it right, car value shouldn't suffer much, and you can look a buyer in the eye.

Yes, this seller has been very up front about it. GA law also exempts ODO after 10 years anyway. I have one local car (Nougat Brown - see my other post) that I'm taking a look at on Friday. If she is strong I'll move forward with a PPI on it. If not, I'll circle back around to this car..

Thanks guys. I've always loved this place. Received tons of great advice and help through the years with my 993. I can tell the experience will be the same with a 3.2...

That new gauge should reflect the actual mileadge...with the appropriate docs....Starnge they would start off with fresh numbers......not heard of such an approach.

BEST!

Uhh, what part is BS?

Is it BS that you can disconnect an SC's speedo by simply sliding it out of the dash and disconnecting the wires?

Is it BS that lots of these speedos have been replaced over the years? "Lots" is a pretty vague term... I never said every car, or your car for that matter, has been clocked. However, compared to the Mustang or BMW forums I muddle through, I hear "lots" more talk about broken Porsche speedos, so I think it's fair to weight a purchasing decision more heavily on condition and records than the arbitrary numbers showing on the odometer. Who knows, in some cars like yours they may be accurate.

But to think every 911 has an accurate odometer... that seems more like BS to me.
