Default Detailed Engine Pics (911SC-Turbo)

I finally got around to scanning a bunch of slides that I shot back in 1987 of an engine rebuild to my 1981 911SC that had been turbocharged.

Some of the work was done to enhance it's performance as a turbo motor, from the days when it started out as a normal 3.0 SC CIS motor. Things like piston crown sprayers were added (look closely!) and the cylinders were shimmed out further to effectively lower the compression ratio so that I would not detonate with premium fuel. (Prior to that I had to run premium and ST104 at all times).

The answer was this engine. It performed extremely well. It was clearly producing about 270 hp (vice the NA 172) with a modest boost of 6 lbs.

The intent of this posting is to help some of the newer to air cooled 911s understand how these things are put together. You will get a chance to see things like the chain tensioners (latest 3.2 Carrera ones--oil fed). Also, you may see a pressure relief pop-off valve within the air box. Of course, it had to be disabled when you have a turbo motor because it would never stay closed! (A liberal amount of GE silicon did the trick).

Builder was Sam Flippo, former owner of BRI Imports in OKC. A tremendously talented businessman, engine builder, and Porsche race car driver.

Very nice. What was the resulting static compression ratio with the shims under the cylinders?

I've heard of people running up to 10psi on the stock 8.5:1 compression.

Wow, those pictures are from a long time ago. So how has the car held up the last 24 years?

Sadly, I sold the car in 1994 so I have no idea what ever happened to it. It went to Florida.

Is the turbo being fed air from the engine fan?

Hey Clive, see where he put the dip stick?

I still can't wrap my head around the CIS engine. Way too complex for me. The 3.0 era I just fog up upon thinking.

The long block pictures however are pure ****.
