Default A birthday celebration like none other .....

So every little tale has a history and so does this one. For the past few days, I was planning on something special to celebrate the first anniversary of my ’86 Carrera 3.2. I thought about several ways to do so including taking her to some exotic locale, a professional photo shoot, or a top of the line auto-spa Rx administered by a master detailer. Then I decided that the best way to emotionally fulfill our desires (both mine/car’s) would be to arrange a meeting with another 3.2 ‘86 coupe and it’s owner. Not just another '86 coupe and it's owner but a special one. One (or in this case two: the car and it's owner) that was instrumental in my subsequent acquisition of the very car whose B'day was being celebrated. (As many know here, after I set out to own an air-cooled I had driven Ed’s ’86 coupe and it was love at first sight one year ago). I called Ed (ivangene) ahead of time (as he lives three hours away) and made plans to meet him. He was excited to meet my baby, as he had never seen her in the flesh. We met at Starbucks, got a cup of coffee and then headed out to the parking lot for a formal introduction to each other’s coupes.

I drooled over his Guard’s red color and my favorite Fuch’s finish, the black anodized one that his car adorned. Ed enjoyed the real period piece that my car was including the original Blaupunkt cassette radio player. We verified their birth certificates by the driver side door (mine was born late '85 and his six months later), then described every little pathology on our cars exterior and interior, exchanging the etiology and history behind those battle scars. After the anatomy lessons it was time for a physiologic workout for our cars. We then drove each other’s cars with the owner sitting in the front passenger’s seat while the other person was piloting the car. Luckily we did not hit too much traffic, as it was still an early Saturday morning hour. Few good winding roads, sweeping entries and exits onto freeways was the perfect setting to stretch the legs of our respective 3.2s. The pride and joy of ownership was glaringly evident to each other when the cars were being driven by the other person. I will let Ed describe his thoughts on my car that was nothing but a very tidy stock 3.2. When I drove his car, I was in awe of the power delivery that Ed attributed to the chip. May be due to this, I felt that the idle was little smoother, and at low revs the engine was more responsive and willing than mine. The engine sounded fantastic, the torque and power delivery was unreal after 4000 RPM. His shifting lever had his own version of Seine which took out a little element of that subtle intricacy that I've come to enjoy on every shift on my gearbox. I was also surprised to not feel that writhing steering wheel that I thought was a sine qua non for a 3.2. His steering wheel had absolutely not even a hint of tremor even at high RPM's. The Sparco seats were quite tight around my thighs and getting out of them was something akin to being “born again”. But there was no denying that when you are restrained by that racing seat everything feels faster. We finally stopped for a photo shoot for the birthday album and then parted ways. The day went better than planned and both my car and I could not have asked for a better way to celebrate this important milestone for my 911. While I drove my car off, I paused for a moment and thought for a second how cool it would be if I could get all my friends here on the 911 section with their cars for a grand get together (Whalebird, you are special to me and can show up without a 911) for one of my car’s future birthday …. Just the thought sent shivers down my spine. Life is short, I wish we could all make it happen….

On a final note, the party is not complete for both my car and me unless I share the moment and the pictures I took with the rest of my “gang” here. The icing on the cake would be your enjoyment of this thread and the replies that follow. Yours lovingly, w00t….

Stupid question incoming:

Theres one thing I still could never figure out about 3.2s/SC's. That trim around the headlight it doesn't seem that the cars year has anything to do with it so I suppose maybe its a euro vs usa trim around the headlight?

Mine wears the H4 headlamps, hence the difference. The only other mod on my car was that it was lowered to euro specs.

Thanks, I drove over a mountain pass the previous night and Ed had no clue that I had planned a photoshoot and he did not prep his car either. FYI, his car had more than twice the mileage. The paint quality on these cars are second to none.

AWE MAN!!

so siince Saturday morning I have been hitting "refresh" awaiting the arival of this thread... The time has gone by so slowly and now that I see the pictures and read the story I wish time would stop so I could stare and reflect on the day.... BRAVO AMAR !!!

well, how to describe this one. When Amar told me he was coming over, naturaly I was excited. I had not seen his car and well, he's just a great enthusist. I met him down at the Porsche dealer where he was dropping off this huge balck monster truck for something or other....I gues it needs oil? (hahahaha) I was able to eyeball and touch this beauty. Sitting in the captains chair and looking throuth the sunroof, I gotta say...pretty awesome beast! So Amar hops in my little buggy and we wisk back to the hotel. I mean litteraly WISK!! since I know him a bit I dont really hold back from a little stretching of the legs.

his words, " You really dirve this man, I drive mine like a Camary" LAughing and full of smiles we pulled into the parking lot to pick up his car. It was nestled in the corner up against the cement wall, exactly where a person with pride and fear of door dings would park.. as we headed to Starbucks I had to stop under that entry way and snap those shopd... you know when the lights are right....do what comes natural. During this I was eyeing up the car...sort of hoping mine wasnt too much of a disapointment by comparison. you know, that little insecurity we feel sometimes. Thinking, DAMN... he just drove 3 hours over the mountain pass, and its SPOTLESS!! - I should have at least hit mine with a quick wash...

on to Starbucks.... a nice lasting coffee, some getting back to our beginings, and naturall some furnature rearranging so we can sit at the perfect spot in the coffee house to watch a random person come over and gooogle over our cars....we scramble for a camera but come up empty. Upon contacting this passer by we discover he owns a Porsche himself but seems to be a bit of a bumble for even the smallest details... a driver, not an enthusists but has an early car and I see Amar and I cringe as he hacks the word FUCH's.....as we are preparing to leave a person pulls rather hastily into the spot next to Amar and we both hold our breath as she tries to manuver the POS and stop the fear we both are experiencing....

off to take some pics, thankfully I dont own black because seriouosly, my car was filthy... GR is just very good at hiding it. I piicked the spot under the trees and we snap a couple shots.. Amar says "lets move the cars" and then hands me HIS keys... I feel a bit nervous... I know its just a car, but it's not.....it's more. As I slip in to move the car it all becomes familliar instantly and I have flashbacks to pieces that I have removed from my car (for no real reason other than to "play around")

The leather shift boot, the carpets, the stock seats....awe man, maybe I should go BACK on mine. We spend some time pointing out flaws to each other, picking the differances, noting conditions and really studying each car. Admittedly his car is in fantastic condition and surprisingly mine is too albit almost double the miles. We find parts of each others car that we think... hmmm I better addrss that, I like "HIS" better... very enjoyable Porsche love

I quick move and back to the pictures before "the man" (a security guard) aproaches and politely but sternly asks us to get the hell off the "priavate property" - WHOOPS!! so back to park my car and drive Amar's. The fun really begins.

sitting in his car I move the chair up and get set... releasing the clutch and instantly feel how tight the car is. Very stock, very supurb, very natural feeling, The transmission is so damn silky smooth I am staring at the shifter in awe! WOW...up on the freeway and I start to discuss the good and the bad... its smooth, very smooth.. but the steering has a little shutter. Its quiet, I have a tiny bit more noise since I am about 1/2 empty inside and a by-pass pipe / chip...Its..... A PORSCHE....and off we go.... ZZOOOOOMMMMMM - love it!!! Amar revieles he too is concerned about not measuring up. He asks how he did on the buy, if its "a keeper" and I agree that he picked a winner!! Its so wonderful to share this time.

back to the parking lot and I insist he drive mine. He has to feel the shift assy (one thing I am very much convinced the stock version of is just a tad sloppy on Porsche's behalf) So his take on my car was equally enlightening. The power is definently differant and the guy I met a year ago who didnt know a Porsche could drive above 3k RPM was in 3rd at 5500 rpm and hammering the pedal I think he liked it because he kept doing it I recall him saying ... WOW, WOW..... and WOW (watch for a chip in the future I think despite me telling him he didnt need one, I think much like me telling him NOT to buy a 3.2 Carrera)

so I am a picky bastard and NO ONE drives my car... yet having Amar ini the seat is somehow comforting. He is a very good driver and admires these cars so much, I havent a worry in the world. Well back for a sitdown breakfast and meeting of his 2 precious girls and lovely wife. I am so thankful for the friendship that has developed out of our meeting. Naturally much Porsche talk but also much family and friend talk.

I have to say one of my best days too!...... we drop his 3.2 off at the shop for a small pick list and service. Call the shop on Saturday and let them know it's there, they plan to make a trip down to put it inside, back to pick up the black beast and off I go....empty pasenger seat, full mind and soul.

the beautiful sun that came out for us returned to a downpour and Seattle returned to a cold wet place... it was like Amar and his baby brought some sun into my life for the day, a day I will remember for a very very very long time!!!

stopped in to see the car being worked on this a.m. and found something interesting....you have Koni adjustable shocks up front.... I didnt look at the rear but would bet on them being there too...how fresh your rear bushings looked I am left wondering what someone did to your stock suspension... its been "upgraded" to some degree... any records of that work? Would like to know if the torsion bars were replaced too... Chris thought since the brake pedal height was lowered and it had Koni's maybe worth a little "looking" in that someone migght have dont some pretty nice stuff to her already.

I plan to stop by latert and see if she's "up" will look around the underside... no way to tell torsion bar size but might see other things... its GOOD NEWS.

she's in good hands and will be getting a nice bit of lovin' I expect you will hear from them about what's all going on with what we discussed. I hope you dont mind me watching over her and expressing to them how (insert body part here) you are.

<Tonge being inserted firmly into cheek...>
Aw, come on! What is this? A bunch of lousy photos of a couple of rust buckets?!?

Sheesh!!

<Tonge now being removed from said cheek...>

I love these threads! These are the good times that I think is the best part of being a car (Porsche) enthusiast!

When (if?) I get my car back on the road, I'd be tempted to drive it across the continent just to partake in some of this ambience (and get a bunch of portrait-quality pictures of my car in the bargain!)

Great story and nice pics. Gotta take a dig on your car, Amar, because I know you seek perfection. It looks like the right side of your hood is a little high. Compare with Ed's car in the pics. That seems to always be the first thing I look at on these cars because mine was high, too, and being a concours car, it had to be fixed. It makes a big difference in overall cosmetics. You should be able to pull that down by lowering the hood latch a couple of millimeters, or it could be that the hood bump stop on that side is adjusted high. Check the bump stop first, then look at adjusting the latch.
