Unhappy Am I too tall for a 911?

I recently went to test drive a Boxster, but was disappointed to find that I was too tall for the call. I am 6'5". I fit in a 911 better, but it is stil not perfect. Is there anything I can do with the stock seats or some aftermarket seats to obtain a better fit. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have dreamed of porsche ownership for a long time. I would hate to have this dream die. Thanks, Paul

Hey Paul,

I too am a pretty big guy, 6'4" with a long torso. I own an ‘84 911 Carrera with a sunroof. I decided the only way I could comfortably fit in was to eliminate the over stuffed stock seat and wound up cutting and removing the seat rails as well. I replaced the original seat mounts with steel 1” box tubing welded into the car. Since the seat frame was now so much lower the computer mounted under the driver's seat would interfere with the fore/aft movement of the seat and had to be repositioned forward. It now shows as a “lump” under my floor carpeting in front of the seat. I finished my project by installing an aftermarket Recaro seat. This combination lowered my sitting position by approx. 2.5". At this point, I have adequate headroom for normal driving but when I wear a helmet at the track, I have to lean my seat further back than normal to get a little more headroom. It took some work but it was definitely worth the effort! Hope this helps.

I'm no giant like you guys, only 6'2", but a targa has more headroom than a coupe, and a coupe with no sunroof has more headroom than a coupe with a sunroof. That is, of course, if you are still in the looking stage which it sounds like you are. And as mentioned already there are methods to get the seat lower.

PSB,

I don't know what year 911 you were considering but a couple of years ago, right after the Chicago Bulls' last championship season ('98?), while parked at a scenic overlook at Flathead Lake, Montana, a new 911 with Illinois plates pulled in and parked alongside of me. The driver was Phil Jackson, all 6' 8 1/2" (and about 5' across the shoulders). He seemed comfortable enough ... was actually driving the 911 bare foot & slipped his sandals on when he got out of the car to snap some pictures.

I suppose that you can have something done vis-a-vis the seats (maybe different rails?), that will make you feel less squished. Don't give up, because once you get yourself into a Porsche that you love, you won't want to get out!

Paul,

I'm also 6'4" and I don't have any problems fitting into my '86 Carrera - loads of room. Try folding your legs up a bit more!

Saw a pic posted in a gallery somewhere in cyberspace-

red Turbo- Illinois plate said " AIR".

Maybe you need an NBA contract to get the right size seats.

I am 6'4" and I fit in a C2 Turbo, but just barely - it really depends on where you have height: legs or torso.

I can not comfortably fit with a helmet and will need to change the seats or rails or both if I want to do DE.

I suspect basketball players have custom seats, rails, and pedals.
