here is how i would end it, unless you go out and purchase a 930. For $200.00 and somebody holds it, tell him the race is on, but you only race two ways, his first. somebody will hold the $200.00. his race i take it will be some rediculous stop light to stop light or 1/4 mile event. once that is completed and you might even win that one, if its 1/4 mile. the final race is for all the marbles and only on a "safe stretch" is 100 mph smash if his p.o.c. even makes it back. the rewards are yours. end of story!!

Cool

They are all right but the most pertinent is the reply by ChrisinColorado !!
This is comparing apples to oranges Sounds like your friend is the one worried about all of this; why is that??

Randy,

You got it right with your post. I agree with everything.

Im looking at 'easy' as how much money it would cost for the similar %HP gains, more specifically, how much money it would take to get the engine to produce more HP after the simple mods. Money can accomplish just about anything on an engine. How difficult the project is, can be measured by the amount required.

Tell your Honda buddy to get real. In addition to my 88 911, I have a stock 88 CRX SI which I bought new at 25 (yes I'm old). Like the 911, the CRX is a toy, as neither are daily drivers. I'm the original owner of the Si and will never sell it. It is a blast to drive, and new Civics are no match for the CRX. Given that, my stock 911 is much faster than the CRX, the 911 can be driven much quicker over a road course than the CRX, but the CRX could hang, or in some cases, be quicker in an auto-x. They are 2 different driving experiences and types of vehicles, but are both fun and great cars for what they were designed and built for.

I do agree the Porsche would last longer over the long haul, and is a better ultra high speed car, BUT the CRX drives almost like new, has a few rattles from the sunroof, but can still cruise all day at 90 - 120 mph easily (440 miles in 4 hr 10 min). I don't think I would want to sustain speeds of 120 mph for 30 minutes straight in the CRX, as it is more prone to directional instability than the 911 at speed.

Just my two cents on the v-tec issue, not sure on the hondas but for a while my company car was an acura 3.2tl ran it up to 130 in third gear with one gear to go. Still felt like I was driving 55mph no problem. Forgot the original question, was it a civic or an accord? Not sure if the accord or available with the 3.2 motor or not which I believe is 285 hp and basically the motor in the nsx. Before anyone lets me have it, I have a 911, two dodges, nothing ever owned japenese, and am looking at getting an M3 right now. Just giving my driving impression of the vtec car I had (company owned).

I cannot believe how much discussion this topic got, we must be bored. A civic beating a 911 at anything? Are you kidding?!

Prior to my switch to german metal, I owned an 88 CRX Si (still one of my favorite cars all time) and a 97 Integra GS-R. Using the GS-R as a comparision, I added an aftermarket exhaust, intake and headers, cost me $500 and I got ten hp. I MAY have been able to get another 10hp out a set of agressive cams but would have lost what little to no low-end the engine had left. On a good day that car may have been able to get into the high 14's in the 1/4 and would run out of gas above 100. Moreover, I had to drive it like I stole it and if I got out of my rpm range, typically in the 3-4 shift, I would be toast because there was no pull below 4500 rpm.

On a track, forget it. Brakes were marginal at best, it handled very poorly due to the front drive set up, even with upgraded shocks and sway bars. On higher speed tracks it was better, but slow corners it would understeer like hell and you had to really feather the throttle to get out at any reasonable pace.

A good running 3.2 will get you through the 1/4 in 14.5 or better, and on the track, even in autocross is MUCH faster in every aspect. If you can drive your car with any skill this is no contest. I have raced one of these fart cans (exhaust and larger wheels and tires only visible improvements, but probably did the usual I/E/H) on some backroads and ate him alive to the extent that when I came to a stop sign he stayed way back and turned the other direction.

A 911 is a racecar with license plates, a Civic is an economy car with a good motor, that's it.

R

P.S. the 3.2 in the accords/TL is 260hp in the S-form. Great motor, still not much torque, but it took 10 years for honda to surpass a 30 year old 2-valve motor. Also, what happened to their famed 100hp per liter? Honda could not even get that much out of the NSX motor and that is a 'supercar'.

According to Car and Driver, a 1999 civic si went from 0-60 in 7.6 sec.

My bone stock SC is still a competitive car today when compared to the new rice.

BTW saw a license plate frame on a Ferrari-"My pony poops rice!" I got a good laugh.

im at that yong age, 25, live in rice haeaven, hawaii and deal with this every day. i have 2 stoplights from home to work, and at least once a week i have a sh!tbox revving its engine at me to get me to race.....on only one occasion did i venture to race....i had fried rice for dinner...

my SOP for zit faced asian kids with lawn mower engines and grapefruit shooter tailpipes is to roll down the window, turn down the radio and ask them if their car is supposed to sound like a lawn mower?

unfortuneatly here in hawaii, it is the ricers that get the girls....but i still get many heads to turn from some girls as well.......

I hate to revive a threadt like this one, but I wanted to reply, and could not log in, so here is what to do.

1) Make him an affiliate member of PCA
2) Sign up for a DE event
3) Get your instructor (who has a 911) to take him for a ride in their car.
4) When he gets out, hand him a clean pair of underwear.

He will understand then!

I don't have any technical come back for you. But the way I look at it is this: I don't care if you blow my doors off in your Civic or any other ricer for that matter. 1/4 mile strip? Great, Porsches were ment for curves! But even if you do take me on the street, that's fine. 'Cause I'm driving the Porsche and you just have some Cheapo run-of-the-mill Honda Civic just like everyone else on the street. A Civic! It's laughable. I probably saw seven of them on the road today! Not only is the styling of your 911 car still competative with what is coming out in today's market, but so is the performance. So what's the contest?

It seems as though the majority of proud Porsche owners started their spirited driving carrier in a cheep Jap car.... there is a reason why we have moved on.

You and your friend should attend the Porsche Owners Club (POC) Short Track Series in Rosamond, CA near Edwards AFB, just a hop skip anjd a jump from Santa Barbara. http://www.porscheclub.org Non-Porsche cars are very welcome. You and you pal get into their program, have some instruction, and then, during timed runs at the end of the day, see who is quickest, that is, if the Honda lasts through the day!
