Check out the front speakers I found in my car. Unbelievable.

They probably sound as good as the OEM's would at this point.
This probably sounds awesome on them

I still have a set of A/D/S 320i seperates, and a set of Nakamichi seperates that I'm saving for a project at some point. I would love to find a nice Soundstream/ADS amp, but It/s not been a priority. As for soundstream, they were one of the best, now I walk into a pawn shop and they have crap boxed under the soundstream name. Be careful. Also, it was popular for some Asian manufacturers to make A/D/S knok-offs, again be careful there. I don't study car audio near what I may have years ago, so I don't care much...it's all crap IMHO.
I have been attracted to the speakers linked below (HI VI audio), They have all the right stuff found in MUCH more expensive speakers under the more popular names. I would prolly get a set for a stock replacement with the idea that anything out there that will fit isn't going to sound that good anyway. Affordable/quality is mutually exclusive in audio, these seem nice enough:

I don't spend much effort on music in Ruby. It's there, but why? Full song out of 3.4 liters of twin-plugged, high compression, cammed, air-cooled motor piped through headers and a Flowmaster muffler is a friggin' symphony.
But, I put new Polk Audio 6" in front and 4" x 6" rears in the 993 for less than $230 in December. With a fairly high powered Sony head unit, it sounds pretty good. Very Porsche door and rear panel friendly.

WB, those look like ver nice speakers, indeed. They'd need to be amped to get the best sound. I wonder if the tweeter detaches, for better aim?
My dog ears can't stand ceramic tweeters, but those are very very nice.
I had a pair of Soundstream 500 Reference series amps, but one caught fire so I replaced it with a Soundstream Rubicon amp. It's worth the extra dough. I have it running some old school Infinity speakers. I can't recall the model. Kappa I think.

OEM speakers from any car from the 80's will be crap. An external amplifier makes a huge difference in sound quality (and volume), but they can be a pain to install (especially in small, classic cars). You might want to think about Alpine's "booster" amp:
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500KTP4...p-445&skipvs=T
It might fit in the dash behind the head unit or in the glovebox. Unless you have an alpine head unit, you would have to cut the wires and connect them directly. 45W RMS is significantly better than 18W RMS.
I still have my 4x50W a/d/s...Lovely stuff.

It does however, list some kind of ceramic wooofer material I have no idea about. I prefer a paper woofer cone, or an impregnated cloth type with butyl rubber surround at most.
A quality, yet conservative, amp would help indeed but I'm not sure these speakers would need any more than any other garden variety mid-grade speaker on the market today...sensetivity is right in line. The easiest thing is to have a decent head unit with a decent power output to avoid any kind of amp install. I do not equate a 'high power" head unit with an amp of at least the same output as in the post above. BUT, I would not hesitate to install a clean and tasteful modern head unit into a 911 as long as the wiring is left intact for easy replacement of the stock unit. Including the speakers... You guys know what I mean.

WB, you are right on the money. Ironically, I don't use the power of my amps that much at all. I have them turned way down, like less than one eighth power. I use them for the sound quality and tunability. Speakers are only half of the story - you need a good system behind them, and amps make a huge difference.
I have an 80s vintage Concord HPL 550 that I am saving for some project someday. I'll probably put it in the 914-6. I have a Blaupunkt head unit currently in the 3.2 911 for the three pre-amp outputs. Not many head units have that many any more, and I use an external crossover. It's got a calibration mic, which comes in handy since the speakers respond to temperature and humidity changes in a big way. They say the 911 does not need good sound or it's not possible to have good sound in a 911. I disagree. Sure, I like the flat 6 as much as anyone, but as a GT car, you have to take it out on the road to enjoy it, and a nice sound system is part of the experience.

Paul, don't sweat it. It's all good fun.
Trem,
I saw that Alpine unit. Might be something to consider. I'm not looking for any major power at this point.
You guys are getting way over my head now with all this audiophile talk. Most of the time I don't even have the stereo on. Like rusnak, I enjoy the sound of the engine and my M&K.
I just want to get some better speakers for those times when I want to listen to some tunes.
