Post Help convincing wife...

Hi folks,

I just picked up a 1988 DP Motorsport 911 Cab. Unfortunately, my wife is less than thrilled, to put it mildly. I think I got it for a great price off of eBay, given it's realitive rarity and the fact that it is a factory conversion. I have emailed DP in Germany about a build sheet and numbers, but haven't heard back from them. All my wife sees is the money being spent. Any ideas on how to soothe her??? Flowers, candy, or beer won't work. I have tried to tell her that this would be my final Porsche purchase(until 993 Targas get more affordable, that is). It is also cheaper to purchase and insure (I hope!)than the factory 930S cab that I was going to buy last spring (until it got sold out from under me because the bank took so long to process my application).

You can see the car at: 1988 Porsche/DP 911 Cab

Thumbs up

Tell her that you can take it on short weekend country rides and pack a romantic picnic basket. Worked for me. Somehow it feels like cheating when you keep one eye on the car!!

I know what you’re going through. Our wife’s think the same way.
This is what I did:
For my 964 turbo I used" I have been working so hard over the last few years I deserve this car”

For my Boxster S I used “ If I get this car it will give me a reason to quite smoking”

For my 996 TT I said, “this is such a rare car, only the second one I have seen in our area for sale, and if I get this, I will quite smoking”. Surprised she bought this one for the second time

OR

Talk about how much repairs will cost on your current car and the one you want needs absolutely no work and in the long run it is actually cheaper to buy this car.

If you need more, I have a ton of excuses, my wife is the best, I think sometimes she just looks forward to what excuse I can come up with whenever I get the itch for a new toy !!

BTW sweet looking car, guard’s red, my choice too!!

Good luck

Car looks great!

If you have the cash, really nice diamonds go a long way....at least with my wife.

Other than that I guess you just ask for forgiveness. Someone on this board once said that it is easier to ask forgiveness than it is to ask permission. In reality I doubt it, but you do have a 911...I don't..so maybe it's worth it!?

[quote] I have tried to tell her that this would be my final Porsche purchase

Not a good statement given your current credibility

Guess I haven't helped much

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Tell her that you'll buy her the new Cayenne Turbo!! Then she could make her girlfriends jealous.

Or tell her that you are going to get a second job... Charging admission to your friends for drooling on that beautiful guards red paint job!

Beautiful car. By the way. Enjoy that little beauty those don't come around very often. I'd love to be able to just purchase a factory slant nose...

Enjoy.

Tell her it will keep you out of trouble and that if you need the money, you can always sell and get your money back. I don't know enough about Slant noses to know if this is true, but it sounds good.
Good luck. I know a few months back I was ready to sell mine. My wife stopped me because she knows how much I enjoy working on it. So though she still doesn't get the big deal about Porsches (I sometimes wish I felt the same), she has learned to except the fact that I enjoy it. Time heals old wounds. She'll get over it, just don't make her a Porsche widow and live in the garage.
Good luck.

I Can see why you went for it, Beautiful DP.
As for the Wife thing, I wish they would just realize where just being good Hunter/Gatherers and it's our insticts kicking in and we have no control.
It's funny how they all think alike??? Clones maybe??
See, Seinfield is smart he collected all his car's and then got married.
Good Luck it never ends

Talking

Why don't you try using a variation on my "Honda Accord Comparison". I use this every time someone comments on how expensive owning a Porsche is. (Why do people insist on commenting on an expense that they have no connection to?)

It goes like this...

So I buy a nice used late 80s Porsche for a little more than $20,000. If I drive the tar out of it I will be able to sell it in 5 years for a little more than $20,000. I will have lost the expense of maintaining it.

Imagine that I buy a nice new Honda Accord for a little more than $20,000. If I drive the tar out of it and keep it perfectly maintained and sell it in 5 years I will be able to get somewhere around $5,000.

I am having a little trouble trying to figure out how the maintenance of the Porsche is anywhere near the expense of the value you lose when you own a "sensible car". (My younger friends who own "rice-mobile sporty cars" get quiet right about this time.)

Try a variation on this and see if plain old greed will change her mind!

Cool

I dropped a big Diamond on her for our 10th anniversary. Three months later, I get a call on a car I was looking for (the one on the left). I asked the wife to come and see it. She went cold, so to speak. I asked (nicely) if she could just humor me and come for a look-see. When she sat down (in the passenger seat), I commented how sweet she looked and the beautiful way the Diamond/Platinum ring looks against the triple black 911. Mission accomplished!!!

I had her like putty and convinced her to let me "low-ball" an offer. I did and they blew me off. On the way home, she was upset that they refused my offer. I indicated that she would have been more upset if they accepted it since she would be thinking that we could have gone lower. Well, to make a short story long, she bugged me all week to call them back but I was waiting them out a bit. The next week, I engaged in a serious price game until we met at a good price. She only bothers me when I get parts now.

You could tell her that you're a grown man and can make your own decisions... or you could casually mention that some of your married friends collect "fast" mistresses and that she is lucky that your only vice is collecting fast cars.

Definately an eye-catcher though! Keep in mind: a beautiful woman can't get you a beautiful car BUT a beautiful car can get you a beautiful woman! Maybe you'd be better off not mentioning that last part... good luck!

Hey, you might tell her what I tell people:

"It's just like a mistress - It's too expensive to keep, but too much fun to give up. The only difference is -It won't show up at the office with a baby or a gun"

No prob;lem re: my wife tho, I sent her to see the car first, and she came home and said

"you have to buy that car!"

Hmmm, come to think of it, maybe she learned that on a wives' BBS under "how to get him to do what you want"....

Have her drive it, she might like it. Mine does.

The only real hurdle i had was my wife wanted me to get a 993 or a 996 because they look cuter, i prefer the 87-89 3.2s. Maybe some day a 993C4S will catch her eye and i will be forced to buy her one But i get to keep my 88.

Tell her not to speak unless spoken too!!!!

Yeh, right...

Reminds me of a joke.

How do you turn a dishwasher into a sweeper?

Hand her a broom

Hey folks,

Actually she is accepting it. Of course matters will be much better if the 944 sells fast (Any takers?!?!?!) I am also getting rid of my Saleen (once again...anyone??). So we were out looking at other cars today. The contests are down to a Suzuki XL-7 Ltd.(Demo); Isuzu Axiom (Demo); the Honda Element (definately funky) and the Mitsubishi Outlander. Trying to keep new payments low so that with the 911 payments I am still laying out the same amount as I was with the Saleen and 944.
