Will 2001 996 seats fit in an 1988 911 Targa?

I am wondering if these will fit and have the same hardware? Will the electric seats work in the 911? Can they be modified to work easily?

The only thing that will make it impossible will be the physical size. Everything about the 911 has gotten bigger with the 996 generation, but if the seats physically fit in the space, I would think that metal brackets could be fabricated and wiring harnesses can be made. Your use of the word "easily" makes it a subjective judgement that I'm sure you'll find differing opinions on.
The question of whether it's been done, I can't answer.

I'm not interested in any modding of the seats other than just maybe buying some kit to make them fit so sounds like they won't work.
What about 993 seats? Same?

Most people in 911 land, when upgrading seats, will go to a Recaro or Sparco, or similar for the weight savings, and don't go with heavy seats out of a newer car.
You'll probably need to make some adaptors to match the seat beds in your car to the seat rails. You have to do this putting 996 seats into a 993. And, of course, the proper electrical

I think they will fit physically, but they are not a direct bolt in. The mounting rails are different, but I think more importantly, the seatbelt configuration may be awkward. I like Ed's suggestion for a nice set of Recaros, or a set of sport seats from the same year (era) car that you have.
As far as the wiring for heaters/adjusting etc. Many newer cars have seat memory and seatbelt buckles that communicate with the rest of the car. There is a control unit under the seats your looking at - not simply a power/ground connection.

I did it into my 86 911TL cab and my 951. Check the 951 forum for the post with link to make the electrics work. Mine were memory so had to figure out wiring to power them up. seat rails are longer so you have to fabricate a 4" extender for the rear holes to line up. Overall not hard and can always be converted back to stock easily.

Factory/standard 996 seats are unexciting to say the least, as are standard 993 seats. if the replacement is to get rid of shabby original seats, no biggie, but they are not much of an improvement in comfort or support, thus the suggestion for good factory sport seats or a matching set of Recaro/Sparco street seats.

I am spinally challenged with degenerative disk disease and have found the 996/986 comfort seats to be the most supportive and comfortable seats I've ever had. I had a set of sport seats in my Boxster and put the stock comfort seats back in. The hard back sport seats look better and have more side bolster support, but they wear me out even on a 3 hour drive. The stock 80s manual sport seats in my Weissach are good, but comfort wise the 996 seats are far better, IMHO, although they do weigh a ton.

We were attracted to these because they are black with the red stitching which is exactly what we wanted to have in the car. They are also the sports seats version. We are replacing regular seats that are in nice condition only because of the looks and we were hoping they would be just as comfortable as the original seats. I'm not a fan of the Ricaro seats in general.

If they are the manual fore and aft version of sport seats it would make it easier to fit for sure, but still not a direct bolt in. The mounting brackets won't line up, but there are any number of things you can do to make them fit. The electrical for the seat back/up and down control could be rigged, but you really need to buy a harness to get the proper connector. Porsche went to flimsy connectors in the late models. 996 seats sit higher in a 993, but I doubt there's much difference in the 911. If you're very tall you might want to figure that out exactly before getting started though.
