Collectibility question: 1974 2.7 Carrera
How collectible is a 1974 2.7 Carrera, fully restored, new engine, ductail, Targa?
How much would you guys pay for a concours quality, fully restored '74?

Thank you! See, that's what I came up with. I told him max $20k. The Seller says $40K. I go "huh"? Even a rare 3.0 Carrera is not worth that kind of money, and would be more collectible than a 2.7, IMO. Am I off?

I have seen nice examples run as high as $25K - $30K. Just recently a 74 Carrera which was in need of a complete engine rebuild sold for close to $18K.

"New" engine could mean a lot; "fully restored" as well. Assuming that this is "parade winning" car, it might catch someones eye if it's a pretty yellow, light blue, or other factory color beyond the classics we all know. Lots to consider, but these cars just don't have the collectors eyes at the moment, as far as I know.
Don't get me wrong, I love me some 74 911. I really do like those goofy little bastard porsches.

It's not like a 901 or a 72 E Coupe.... it's a Targa with the dreaded 2.7.

The restoration work was probably worth every penny, it's the car thats not that valuable.
Now let's see how long it takes for a Targa owner to respond...
Part of what I see as the broad appeal of a 74(or a 2.7 car in general), is the reletive entry price. The 74 could be paticularly light with roll up windows and a no-roof coupe, which lends themselves well to carbs/cams etc. And all this can be done in sunny California where CARB restraints make a 74 a good choice.
Now a concours 74 Targa is going to get lost in the stratosphere against the early cars, or a 993.

I think the term "Carrera" was missed by some. Is the vin # 911441XXXX they have some momentum towards the longhoods. If its a euro model with the MFI engine, then mucho more than $20K in my humble opinion. $40K could be cheap to someone. Especially considering the costs of restoration could easily double that amount. Good luck and all the best

A few mid-year's listed in Panarama
74 911 Coupe(non-Carrera) $13K
76 911S Targa $22K
77 911S Coupe $19K (was $21K with 41,000 miles)
74 911 Carrera $30K with rebuilt engine and trans
74 911 Targa $28K (meanwhile there is a 94 C4 factory widebody for $28K)
75 911 Carrera Coupe 1988 Manhattan Trrophy winner $92K
Do the sellers really get these asking prices?

The Euro cars in 1974 might as well have been 1973 Carrera RS models. As for the US versions, they have a 175HP 2.7 CIS motor, NOT the more desireable 210HP 2.7 MFI motor. '74 and '75 US-model Carreras were produced in relatively small numbers. The US Carrera is essentially the same car as the '74/'75 911S (sans the side graphics). If you find a REAL '74 Carrera, the factory ducktail is worth something as I believe the fiberglass ducktail was grafted onto the aluminum rear deck lid.
As for the "dreaded 2.7 motor...", please do your research. Later versions aptly deserved the negative comments heaped on the 2.7 motor. However, the '74 2.7 has proven relatively reliable.
If you can find a REAL US Carrera (VIN 911440XXXX or 911441XXXX) with the correct 2.7L motor and 915 transmission for less than $20K, you've found a good deal IMO.

He says there were only a few hundred or so of this particular 911. I don't know......seems to be a garden variety 2.7 to me. A 3.0 Carrera is another matter.
So, was there an uber special '74 2.7 that we don't know about? This one is orange, concour type paint, just the kind of car that sucks you in.

The 74-77 US Carrera's have been moving up quite a bit in price over last few years, I'll agree they are really nothing special but you see quite few for sale with high asking prices, don't know if folks are paying those prices. I'd rather have a good SC personally but those have gotten more expensive too.
