Assuming you have the manual heat controls between the seats and we're talking 89 and earlier 911's....

Air is bled off the cooling fan either directly to the heat exchangers, or into an auxilliary fan which can boost the airflow to the heat exchangers. The air flows over the heat exchangers into a box in each wheel well. This box has a door in it. When the lever between the seats is down, the hot air is exhausted into the wheel well. When the lever is lifted, the door changes position (via a wire between the lever and door) sending heated air on towards the passenger compartment. In models that have the auxilliary fan in the left corner of the engine compartment, this is turned on when one of the levers is raised.

I just repaired the heater blower in my 911. When you are tinkering with the levers, be mindful of the two small metal contacts that control whether the blower is on or not. When I bought my car the contacts were not aligned correctly and the fan was always on. I ended up finding this out only after the brushes in my heater blower were shot.

Sharky - check the fuses in the Left Rear of the engine compartment (behind the black panel). One of these is for the engine mounted blower motor.

i checked the fuses and the blue 25 amp fuse had blown , i replaced that and the fan worked , but with a loud screeching noise , like a dry bearing ,
is the fan the black metal part on top of the engine ?
if it is the bearing , can it be replaced or do i need a complete part ?
i still have a problem with the sunroof only pulling back & down on the left hand side, see previous thread .
i have only had the car about 5 weeks , and the clutch slave / master cylinder have also had to be replaced .
are these problems normal , the car has only done 54 k , and was not used very regularly.

The fan motor is black with a silver cylinder to its right. It is located above and to the left of the engine. I do not recall seeing any bearings in mine, just a spot to grease at the top of the enclosure. I made sure to lube it up good. Hope that helps.

Sharky,

I have had my 911 for about 8 months.....you name it I have fixed it. From the heater to the rear window to an engine upgrade. It does seam that there is always something to do. People have assured me that you will learn to love it. Well it does take a bit of time and there is a lot of looking at it and wondering why do I keep this thing........well as soon as you drive it down the road and the sort of feeling that it gives you know why.....I have even seen some of my friends driving it. They sit there with the look of an aristocrat......my wife also loves driving it....probably the attention she gets. Anyway hang on in there until the wallet is empty.
