I have owned two 944s and am considering purchasing a 1968 912 that has a 2.2 liter 6-cylinder engine and has been badged as a 911. The car is a non-original bright yellow with 16" fuchs and updated mirrors and bumpers, it actually looks like a pimp car. It has MSD ignition and a relatively new interior. The body is in good shape but the engine smokes and the brakes need work. The asking price is $8500.
Can you guys shed some light on how much this car might be worth or what helpful hints you have for investigating a car like this? It needs some mechanical work and I don't want to overpay for a car that is worth a lot less.
thanks,

68 912 w/ lots of non-original parts & paint, and smoke? I'd say no more than $3,000. You didn't mention the rust level, but this is key to the valuation, so maybe even less. You can do a lot better for a lot less. Check ebay sometimes, they usually have several of the older 911/2's listed and can give you a range of values.
Happy hunting!

Joseph,
Consider what a perfect 1968 912 is worth ($10K?) Start with that, and subtract the amount for the repairs necessary to restore the car to perfect, original condition. In this case you are talking about (at least):
1) A complete respray
2) 912 engine purchase and labor to swap
3) Brakes
Just considering these fixes I would estimate that starting with the asking price, you would wind up about $18000 in the hole.

I'm somewhat qualified here....I recently disposed of my 68 912 and had a 83 944 before that.
Prior post is right, SMOKE may mean rebuild, factor in $9000 worse case on your purchase price. A 912/911 hybrid has little collector resale value. Also, comming from a modern 944 into a 68 you will be very disappointed to say the least. That car may make a good 3rd (4th) car, project to tinker with, $3000 is about right.
Look for a good SC or Carrera for under $12000, you will be happier, lose less and drive more
