Default Getting Ready to Look at this

After much thought and debate, I am getting rid of my s2000 daily driver and making my garage queen 1999 e36 M3 (only has 28k on it) a daily driver. I am looking for a Porsche for something to work on and to drive in nice weather. My first car was a 67 Porsche that I restored with my father, and ready to go back to my roots of why I love cars.

Here is a car that I can restore, while driving. The price seems around 5k because the engine, nor the transmission has not had a rebuild yet. It does seem to have been cared for. Please give me your opinions.

Thanks,
Adam

I actually find the s2000 a lot more fun to drive than the m3. The m3 is a very comfortable car to drive, but its too heavy for the amount of hp it has. Needs another 40 or so to make it a fun car. Its just more practical, to keep. Has a back seat and somewhat of a decent size trunk. Some people grow up and drive SUV's, I switch to my m3. Hey I am trying, 33 is approaching!

My "grown up" car is a Burb... family/dog hauler Seats 8 with enough gear to cause a sea going vessel to list

the P-car will be a blast - something very fun about these cars that makes me feel all 19 again!

That seems like stong money for a 154,000 mile car.

I don't think that is a bad price for a G50 cab. Miles don't scare me if they are taken care of. My '85 has 160K on it and it doesn't burn a drop. I would look into my the script on the deck lid is low. Was the car hit?

It's got the 993 "basket handle" brake light. Interesting

I'd say 17K - even a g-50. 156K miles - bet you at that mile level the limited slip - slips.. He's spent some money - new top and motors those are expensive - Top end - but the bottom end still has 156K.

Adam- I've gotta go with Ed on this one, it could be a dice roll. Until several questions are answered- the jury is out. 1) extensive service records--can they be verified by speaking directly to the shop where performed? 2) the new top and motors are expensive--but even more expensive is a bottom end-build-up and trans synchro r&r or lsd refresh.
3) is there even a hint of previous body work, or is the brake light bar a styling statement?

You may have fond memories of a father/son rebuild project--and the prospect of a drive/restore project might be exciting given your willingness to do the work yourself--but the potential needs of this car can be quite expensive until you know for certain what you are dealing with. Don't get me wrong--I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but there are alot of great cars out there in this price range. Don't even hesitate to pony up for a quality PPI. It could be a fun project--but you could also go way underwater here without proper verification.

Lots of cars with 60-95k miles in this price range. Not sure id bite unless TRG1 questions are answered very thoroughly.

You guys are right, this could easily be 10k-20k repair mess quickly. Even a decent PPI might not show what could happen in an instant.

I am considering setting up a blog on my Porsche hunt for all the new/some what out of the game buyers out there. Is anyone interested in contributing/helping with this blog as go on with the journey?

Thanks for the help so far,

That is strong money. Keep looking. M3 is a fun car, but BMWs are bloated. S2000 is a very cool roadster, but so is a Miata, and a Boxster(S). An aircooled Carrera is very much an appliance. It will fit like a glove once you get used to its quirks, is very reliable - moreso than any modern vehicle, handles its power and chassis in a balanced grace, but becomes a wicked street/track car with a good exhaust system and modest suspension mods. Are you dead set on a Cab.?
