Scan the archives for the current Porsche recommendations, which are all, except one, full synthetics. Otherwise, use what your owners manual recommends. I happen to have an 82SC owners manual handy, and FYI, it recommends in the 60-80 degree F range grades: 10w-40, 10w-50, 15w-40, 15w-50, and 20w-50. It also says that Porsche recommends single grade oils only if a multi-grade oil is not available.

Oil filter - what year 911 are you talking?

I have a 71 911 s and I think I am going to use 20w-50 with a maule filter. What brand of oil is best? I always used mobil 1 in my newer cars but that was synthetic and I'm not using synthetics in the '71.

Kendall GT-1 20w-50 and Mahle filters for my 71. I have heard of synthetic causing leaks in older cars do old seals. Dont know if its urban myth or not.

Don't use anything but a German filter. The American filters make noise. I'ts hard to describe;kind of a burbling, flushing sound. I got this from Bruce Anderson and Jerry Woods and they're right. I tried a Purolator on my '70 because I couldn't get anything else. It was noisy. Something about the valve system.I guess it filters OK. I even heard of someone replacing a chain tensioner trying to cure the noise.
