Post removing lug nuts

Does anyone know a way to remove the lug nuts (painted black) without scratching them. I removed one the other day with the lug nut wrench provided in the tool kit and it cut into/scratched the lug nut and removed the paint. I don't want to do this to all of them. Maybe tape the lug nut first? Anyone have any ideas.
Thanks,
Dan

check performance products website or magazine--i know there is a lug nut remover with nylon in the head just for sensitive porsche lugnuts. will not scratch. good for painted or polished.

Dan,

There are numerous sources for soft sockets. I'm not a big fan of the ones with the nylon liner as the corners tend to round off fairly easily.

A better option, in my opinion, is the <a href="http://www.ajusa.com/cgi-bin/inventory/view_product?prod_id=0000000248&part_number=AJR%20721%20200" target="_blank">aluminum socket</a> sold by AJ USA. I think that <a href="http://www.stoddard.com/parts.html" target="_blank">Stoddard</a> sells their own version as well.

Good luck,
Tim

Anyone know a source for the soft socket made by, I think, Stahlwille?

Making do with the aluminum socket, for years, but would like to "move up" to the plastic lined version.

My experience with a soft socket (nylon) is that they too sctatch the lug nuts, just not as quickly or as bad. I am considering a way to paint mine this summer. I have 40 of them plus steel one so I have room to experiment.

I have tried the Performance Products nylon lines 19mm socket, the aluminum socket...the lug nuts are going to get scratched...learn to live with it. Buy an extra set of lug nuts. Once a quarter, or as frequently as you feel the need, swap them out, and shoot the old lug nuts with a coat of paint out of a spray can.

Next, find something else to worry about! <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

Get a thin but strong plastic sheet, place it over the nut, and then press the socket head into it, turn, voila! your lug nuts won't be scratched.
