Vertex Fan/alternator housing
Just received a replacement Vertex fan/alternator housing. It'll prob. be a week or two before I get a chance to install it, and I'll let everyone know how it goes. One thing I noticed right of the bat is that it no longer has "vertex" and the part number labeled on it. Not sure if that means they've heard the complaints about it and decided to change things...or I got some weird version of the replacement...

Thanks, Ed. I've heard the same thing, but with the original part NLA and no other replacements readily available I'd figured I'd give it a shot. Fingers crossed!

My original fan housing had cracks and I had the Vertex installed..
..that was the better part of a year ago and things are going well.
Nothing conclusive here, but fit and finish seem fine. Our choices are limited here.

What are OE fans and housings worth???? I've probably got a dozen housings, and maybe 3 or 4 11 blade fans sitting in the "junk parts" warehouse. WARNING: if anyone PMs me for one, I only go up there once a month, that day is tomorrow, and I'm beyond pressed for time on my visit there.

I don't know about the current fans, but I did see some Vertex fans about 5 years ago. They look like OEM, but you take a look at the back side and well, there were lots of drill holes in the hub area to balance it out. The OEM fan on the other hand is like a work of art.

Mine has a Vertex housing that replaced the badly cracked OEM housing.
No problems at all, it fit perfectly with no modifications and I'll wager it will outlast the crappy original one.
Vertex has great customer service as well. They were out of replacement fans (I needed one of those too) Vertex supplied a brand new OEM Porsche one for the same price as theirs.
Just because a part is not "genuine Porsche" doesn't necessarily mean it is inferior. The Vertex part is nicely made and I'll wager it will last at least as long as the OEM one, probably longer.
Correct me if I am wrong, but believe the original housings are a magnesium alloy. The Vertex housings are aluminum.

Thanks for all the interest! 7 PM/post/emails so far. Should have been more specific. Liklihood of any 3.0- stuff is minimal. All the "junk" parts are 2.4-2.7 stuff. But I'll look around.

Given the number of anecdotal reports of alternator/fan housings cracking, I'd be reluctant to purchase a used one. I mean, realistically, even if a used one looks good now, it's impossible to know if it's 100 miles away from cracking.
If I'm ever in the unfortunate situation to need a housing, I'll probably buy the Vertex unit, make any modifications necessary to ensure fitment, and go from there.
My $.02.

I had to replace mine on the 3.2 during the rebuild back in 2008. Original had cracks. Yes, they are Magnesium.
At the time, I found new OEM ones but they were over $1K. Bought the Vertex one (says Vertex where Porsche put the part number). The mechanic said it fit fine. He would have told me to send it back if it wasn't.
