Default Found this car!

After 5 years of looking and boring everyone to death posting the same thread over and over I finally found the car, and right where it was the last time I knew about it. Now I just have to decide if I am going to pay a 930 price for it, after having spent all the $ to make it look this way and put down way more power than a stock SC. I posted a thread on Pelican that led me to the owner. he knows how long I've been looking so negotiations aren't likely to be successful from my perspective. According to the current owner it still looks pretty much like it did here, has 82k, 15k more miles in the 10 years since I owned it, and has one minor oil leak. A dealer has been servicing it once a year and vouches for it.

All steel conversion. the fenders, lights, and such came from OK foreign off a wrecked 930 slant. It has MSD, FI, Mahle P&C, aggressive cams, SSI, gutted 2 in 2 out muffler, and a PAxton supecharger, just replaced. In addition, Sanden compressor, full leather sport seats, dash, nice Crutchfield sourced stereo with amp under front bonnet, under dash cover with speakers, remote locks, Bird console in matching blue leather, and that's just what I remember.

What is it worth if you don't have an emotional attachment? The same as any 82 Targa? A little more for the motor? Most of the work was done between 50 and 60k miles during the 90s.

so I was not a part of the bored to death crowd,

sounds like you owned this before and have a chance to buy it back???
what's it worth... ask the seller what he wants for it

its nice but not for everyone, value is in having something someone wants bad enough to buy

You ought to go back in time and kick your *** for selling that thing. I've been looking everywhere for it too.

Very glad to see you find it. I hope that you find peace in what ever happens next.

The current owner is willing to sell. Asking 28k. I sold it for 20 in 2000. Transport costs and a needed valve adjustment gets the price to 30k. I want it back, and I am probably going to buy it, but I am struggling with the knowledge that it's not worth anywhere close to that number. I'll have to sell at least 2 maybe three toys in order to stay married. My wife is not in favor of the purchase. I had this car before I had her.

That seems like a lot of $$$$, but if you really want the car then go for it. It is easier to ask for forgiveness then to ask for permission.

I didn't want to sell it. At the time I was in the middle of a divorce, my son was in college and I got transferred to another state. I didn't have a place to keep it and yada yada yada. Of all the cars I've had I was most attached to this one, and I spent a ton of money and time getting it the way I wanted it. I've always been enamored of slant nose 911s and even though I realize not that many people like the 80s bling anymore, it still gets my blood boiling. For a few more k I could buy a late 80s 930 slant nose with factory provenance, but it still wouldn't be this car. Hence my quandary.

If it were me. I'd say pretty much the same as any '82 targa - but probably less. Modifications are subject to personal taste. and the more that are made, the lower the chance a seller will find someone that likes them all. If it's all to your liking, great! But it does give you some bargaining power since originality generally bring higher values in these cars.

I understand that rationale, and I have a Weissach I am trying to unprofessionally restore myself, but it is worth more than a stock SC to me, plus it is putting about 350 to the ground with the blower, 280 with the belt removed, or it DID! IT's not worth 28 though, even to me when I am using my brain. I know myself well enough to understand that, since I am obsessing over it, I will most likely part with the money at least until I can sell off other toys to pay for it and placate the wifey. Bouncing off this group and Pelicanites does help put it in perspective, though.

That's the key point, in my opinion. I always buy on what something is worth to ME. I also never expect to recoup any money spent on modifications, and probably lose some on top of that.

Keeping my expectations low means seldom being disappointed.

You'll apply more value, but the owner needs to be motivated as well, and has some say in what he values it at. Test the water, all he can say is no. Also, do you know the paint is as you remember, upholstery, what service and love it's had since you owned it? It may have "age spots" you aren't aware of, that may tarnish its luster a bit.

20k is still probably top dollar for this car. If It were me, I wouldn't pay over that. If you do, you'll most likely have buyer's remorse and a pissed off wife. Not worth it. Sometimes the memories are worth way more than the reality. Not to mention the motor is probably tired from all that blower work. That motor has to be very stressed out if it's making 350 hp.

I'd much rather have a factory slant. (actually almost bought one) Plus a factory slant is a desirable car to a lot of folks. It will hold it's value or go up in value, not lose 40% the day you purchase it. You need to be smart here and listen to your head, not your heart.

Just say no.

Or offer him 20k.

Ok, this is just wrong and I'M KIDDING, but....

You could have several "interested parties" contact him about it and laugh at his $28k price till it falls down to something more reasonable (like exactly what he paid for it 10 years ago maybe). You are bent over a table here, you can try to reason with him that it truly isn't worth that but he knows you want it.

Given you obviously want it I'd offer to split the $8k difference with him and show him dozens of examples of why this is probably a $15k car you are willing to pay him $24k for.

I've never been crazy in love w/ the slants but that is a damn sexy car you show in the picture.

I am going to agree with RollingArt on this one, time to keep it as a great memory. Keep in touch with the current owner though, see if his number comes down in the future. The current owner might be working you a little on price right now because he knows of your sentimental attachment to the car.

aside from the obvious (driven it lately? / recent PPI? / are those mods deducts? / etc), a coupla quotes occur...

"You can't go home again." Thomas Wolfe
“When you finally go back to your old hometown, you find it wasn't the old home you missed but your childhood." Sam Ewing

28K? Seriously? I know there is some emotional attachment - but Seriously.

You can find a real Slant Nose (M505) factory car for that sort of money - or an m491 Carrera.
