Question fabspeed vs. ghl vs. b&b vs. dansk

I've heard good things about all of the aforementioned sport exhausts- which one should I get for my 84 911 (single inlet, single exhaust) ?

You get what you pay for in these premium mufflers....sometimes.
There are reports of poor construction and durability problems with one of the ones you mention. However, I have a GHL on my car and find it well-made and not too loud. Not all of these mufflers have a sound that is pleasing to most ears.

You might also want to consider Monty mufflers, which users say tend to be a little bit louder than average, in a good way.

As fas as Monty is concerned I'll say this much. With the stock heat exchangers and a cat test pipe, a 3.2 carrera Monty with the big 4 inch outlet is the best sounding anything I ever put on my car. Even though I have an sc, I put in the 3.2 version because the pipe comes out the bottom and looks better than the sc version that comes out the top of the muffler. Look at the website and you'll see. It is all rounded out and beatiful instead of the standard boxes everyone else makes. It sounded like a 930 turbo with a free flow exhaust, burbles and all. Real Deep and throaty, never high pitched. I wonder how the Dansk sounds. I haven't heard it but I like the fact that it fits just like the stock muffler.

Thumbs up

Ed,

I have had a Dansk dual in/single out and currently have a Dansk dual in/dual out (which was my original plan). Both sound nice. The single outlet is quieter, of course. The dual outlet is not too loud externally, there is a considerable amount of interior resonance however. But the dual outlet sounds great; yes it burbles like a turbo and the engine revs more freely with two exhaust pipes versus one.

I have visited the Fabspeed website and think their product appears to be of high quality. I have read some nice things about Monty but have not actually seen or heard their product, same for GHL (or GLH?).

Richard.

I have GHL headers and exhaust on my 930 and like the sound. But today, while my mechanic at Prototech was doing some other work, he looked at the muffler and told me that this must be the most restrictive mufler he had ever seen. He was actually surprised that I was getting any power at all. He was going to make some changes in the mufler and expects to get tons of extra hp out of my car. (930 ruf). I'll let you know if there a HP difference after he's done with his modifications

I'm curious...how could a mechanic, or a plumber for that matter, look at a muffler, and tell it was "restrictive"?
X-ray vision, perhaps?

dial 911,

apperently when he looked thru the mufler inlet, the air would come to a plate inside the mufler which then had a smaller hole in it. The way he was describing it was that all the air would be "bunching up" trying to get out of this smaller hole. Prototech is the same as Protomotive and are highly regarded in the turbo world. Either way, I will post results, good or bad, after I get my car back. Should be Wednesday

for anyone who cares,

I got my car back, with the new modified mufler, and the HP difference is incredible. I have the guts of the GHL mufler at home in case anyone would like to see pictures, but I must agree with my mechanic (see previous post). By the way, if you doubt Prototech's workmanship, they have a 1 month backlog for their own headers because Champion Motorsports buys every single one they produce.

I have a GHL on my 89, and I really like it. Great sound and power. Adding the Muffler, along with CAT bypass and mass air flow from autothority gave me 30-32 more HP as measured on DJ dyno, plus car "feels" much more responsive.
