I wish you luck and bid you welcome. But, you need to study before making statements like your last. A well cared for 911 engine, particularly in your price range should not need an engine build! If it does, your $7k budget for repairs upgrades will need to be increased a few thousand.
Again, good luck with the hunt.

I probably misspoke and I apologize! I didn't mean that the car I get would necessarily need an engine rebuild, just that I love the design of these motors and always have and I want to be able to tear one down and put it back together when I need to. I am using this car as a complete hobby car. Not a DD (I have two of those!), so I can have it parts and not worry about it! I absolutely know I have a TON to learn. That's why I joined here and to Pelican boards. I am looking for any all input by more experienced people. I am expecting a few more book from Amazon today that will give me even more insight into these wonderful cars! Having said that, though, reading books can only take you so far. You have be around, in, and under them to truly know what you are doing. I also want to learn the best way to competently drive them. I have had an opportunity to attend the Derick Daley driving school, but that was 10 years ago so I definitely need a refresher in performance car driving.
Cheers,
joe

This is a good book about someone that embarked on a Porsche project
The Gold-Plated Porsche: How I Sank a Small Fortune into a Used Car, and Other Misadventures
$10,000 car, $59,000 in parts...

Milt on the pelican boards is elling an 88 Coupe that needs an engine rebuild.
Has over 200,000 miles on it and is still driveable.
Last I heard he was asking 12K
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...ler-worth.html
Send him a PM if you are interested

Another question. I have been looking at Cars.com, Craigslist, Autotrader, local papers, and the classifieds here and Pelican. Any other places I can look for my dream?
Thanks

Hi and welcome!
The PCA is often a good source for classifieds for cars that have (on average) been well-kept.
You will be surprised by how much money it will require just taking a nice SC/Carrera and taking care of all the "typical" things - like suspension bushings (and typically new shocks, tie rods, ball joints etc. - this stuff is wearing out on most cars), basic motor maintenance/oil-leak fixing, shifter bushings etc. (even doing all the work yourself). Tearing into a 911 motor is easily an $8K to $10K proposition, doing nearly all the work yourself, unless you are just refreshing the valve guides or something. But if you are going to do that, you should do the headstuds, and depending on how things are the p's&c's, and of course the connecting rod bushings and bearings, and then if you are going to go that far, shouldn't you just do the mains too? Ooops, there you go, $8K NO problem! (Quite easily more...)
If you want a hobby car, get a good, solid 911 that "needs nothing", and then spend the $$ fixing up the myriad of items that you inevitably will discover it actually needs!

Joe,
This should keep you busy for a while
http://www.rallystuff.com/pcar_sources.html
Here are some for sale on the Triangle PCA website
http://www.carolinas-pca.com/
The 84 Coupe listed is no longer for sale, my brother had a buyer for the car but had a change of heart and decided to keep it.

But you alluded to the fact that is questionable. Wait til Doug Bray replies to my joke.
