Hey all,
I just sold my car and looking to purchase my first 911. Fell in love with another family member's show room quality 930, now need something for myself. I would be using it as a daily driver, but also have a motorcycle for backup. Let me know your thoughts on the car below
I am going to view the car today or tomorrow. From what the guy says, and the pictures I have seen, it looks to be in great shape. Like I said, daily driver but I live about 6 miles form work. I dont mind doing work to the car, but I would not want to spend more than $3k a year on it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. You can also email me at HamiltonSeth@hotmail.com I am in the Southern California area, so if you know of any nice 911s under about $13k, please pass the info along. Also, looks arent as important to me as a sound running car. I plan on repainting anyways.

911 SC Carrera 3.0L (black w/ tan interior), tint, polished Fuches, clean paint & Title. Runs Great & Looks Clean. MECHANICALLY: Complete engine rebuild, manual transmission rebuild, & clutch all within 25k miles (all receipts - Total combined $13.5k), new fuel pump, rebuilt ignition control within 3k miles. Good Brakes & tires w/ good tread remaining. New shocks, bearings, joints, shocks, shortened shifter, distributor cap, fuel accumulator, filter + Many replacement parts w/ all documentation receipts & history to the car. (182k original w/ 25k miles on rebuilt motor, trans & new clutch of all major parts). INTERIOR: CD player w/ good sound system. Rubber & Trim was replaced about 5 years ago, headliner, seats, & dashboard (no cracks) are all in excellent condition. The car is always garaged and I am selling it because I rarely drive it. The sunroof works but is off track and needs to be adjusted. Also missing driver side door pocket. $10,800 Firm - You wont find one like this for the price - the price is NOT negotiable - the price is final and I will not take anything less - alot of the other cars on here are selling between $15k (that need some TLC) to $25k but the cars are sitting for months. This car is instead priced to sell. Must See.

The price isn't crazy, so it may be priced right. It would be nice to see what "rebuilt motor, trans and new clutch" all entailed. If they paid someone to do that, as sick as it sounds, $13.5K wouldn't necessarily go that far to go thru the big lumps thoroughly. Unless the work was done several years ago when parts may've been more reasonable. But, you need to know what was done. Some may say new rings and bearings, and some headwork constitutes a rebuild. Some may say you need new pistons and cylinders, and a LOT of other parts.
As Ed said, a link or more pics could be helpful.
I will say that a 6 mile commute in a 911 is not a good thing. You do this everyday, and you'll be putting a lot of wear and tear on the motor. These need to be driven and fully warmed up. You'll get lots of moisture building up in the oil and case if you don't. 6 mile commutes mean you'll be doing $50+ oil changes every other month.
This car is definitely seeming to be worth investigating further.

Even before I went to Ed's post, I too was thinking that I should get the name of the mechanic who charged 13.5K for a complete engine/transmission rebuild, & clutch install so that when I need mine I could seek their services. PPI is crucial.
Black and tan is such a nice combo. Why would you want to repaint it ??? Nothing comes close to factory paint.
On a sidenote, Ed, the engine oil temp gets to the first bar after about 7 miles or so. So your thoughts are interesting to note. I would think that 3 to 5 mile commutes are "short" and unhealthy. Interesting.

Barely, in my case^^.
6 miles is too short, IMO. Throw in a couple or a few stoplights, even more so. You want all engine parts, and more importantly the oil, to get to temp. Then to run at least a short period (15-20 minutes?), at full temp.

Good to know Ed for my 3.2's biweekly workouts. I have no traffic lights and run it about 20 minutes on the backroads at about 35 to 40 miles/hr before I stop it ... may be I will drive it a bit more. To the OP, sorry to get off topic.

I've been into numerous one-owner cars that had short mileage commutes in urban traffic that had less-than-stellar maintenance, both in Phoenix and the Bay Area climates, with no real extra internal wear.
Understand that we were into many, many, many, many (nearly all) pre-'84 cars from 30-60K because they'd puked a chain tensioner. So there was ample opportunity to have fully inspected anything to do with the cam drive, and if an owner wanted, to peek into the P/C set (especially if Alusil) and the rod bearings. Normally, there would be no reason to get into the bottom end unless it was a 2.7L that pulled studs. Even then, you could reuse the mains. My personal POS, 1 owner, 100K '79 that had maybe 4 oil changes when I got it was so perfect internally I could have just resealed it with only valve guide replacement.
So I guess what I'm saying is these engines are robust. (But no way, no how are 100K+ valve guides anything but shot.)

Robust yes, but all Other things being equal, I ain't making 6 mile runs, and I wouldn't want a car that did. The other side of this is that the cars/engines are all getting older and longer of tooth. What may have been good at 30-60k may not be good from 100k or higher.
