Default How to "open" door panel?

I want to replace the speakers in the driver side door.

Any tips on how to open up the panel? Is it just a matter of unscrewing the whole thing? Do I need to watch out for what happens when I take off the panel?

Phillips screwdriver, small flat screwdriver for the lock **** cap, allen keys (long), needle nose pliers for the latch actuator and window wires is all you need. Note the position of the window wires on some scratch paper. Use short sheetmetal screws and keep the speaker watershield in place. It assists the speaker acoustics and volume. Replace the plastic barrier shield. Easy job.

You will also need a pair or screwdrivers or door panel puller to safely remove the plastic retainers.

On my '86 the speaker grills pop off with a flat screwdriver and the speaker can be removed without pulling the panel.

You'll want to measure how much room you have when you get the old out. IIRC, there isn't much.

I have a pair of 6.5" Infinity Kappas that fit well. Love them, bi-amped.

UPDATE: so turns out you can easily just unscrew 6 screws on the bottom "storage container" (sorry, don't know how to call that part) and it comes off just like that. So no need to take off the panel.

Thanks for all the input!

I plan on replacing my door speakers relatively soon as well.
Good luck on the replacements, Marlon. Let us know how it goes when you're done.

I know the stock speaker size states 5 1/4". How is it, rusnak, that you were able to fit 6 1/2" speakers? Is the opening in the door panel really larger than 5 1/4? Did you have to drill any extra holes to make a larger speaker fit?

Thanks.

I still haven't decided what speakers to get either. I'm gonna check out a couple of speakers this weekend.

Believe it or not I actually went to Galpin Autosports AKA Pimp My Ride for my door speakers. They did just a tad bit of trimming to the plastic behind the speaker to fit the magnet.

looking for part#

No go finding the part#....the nice part is that they were able to use the stock OE covers over the new Blaupunkt speakers. You'd never know it was done.

When I put 6.5s in mine, this is what I ended up doing. Cutting and mounting the plywood plate was pretty easy and gave the speakers a solid base to screw to. No cutting of the sheet metal was required and the finished product looks good. No pics of mine, though...

Careful with the speakers. A big magnet will pull the the door skin in. Well..........it could happen.

One of the cool thing about these cars is there are screws, not little plastic tabs that break when you have to take an interior panel off.

I think there is a blow by blow on door panels on pelican.
