Default Did I blow the brake master cylinder?

While bleeding the brakes last night I pumped the brakes and now for the life of me can not build any pressure with all of the valves closed. I read that you should not do a full throw pump which I did so I am guessing that I ruptured the seals in the brake master cylinder.

Is there a test I can do to be sure before I order this part?

are you sure you don't have air in the system ?did you bleed the clutch also ? if these check out you may indeed need a new master

It could very well be just air in the system. Now matter how much I pump I am not able to get any resistance in the brake pedal.

I have not done the clutch yet.

Greg,

How many miles are on your car? Does it have the original MC?

Make sure all the bleeders are closed and not leaking a bit.

Does the pedal offer ANY resistance before going to the floor?

Hi Steve,

I have 112k miles on the car. I am not sure if the MC is original or not. I will go back out here in a bit and double check all of the bleeders.

The pedal does have some resistance but very little. One thing odd that happened was I used a vacuum to draw from the right rear wheel and brake fluid spilled out of a small tube under the left front of the car. I am guessing it was some sort of vent valve connected to the brake fluid reservoir. After the fluid spilled onto the garage floor I could not get any pressure back from the brake pedal.

Sounds like the MC vent line wasn't closed/clamped off.

If you have little or no resistance at the pedal and it goes to the floor with little pressure, its most likely that the MC is bad, if the bleeders are not seeping,

was it a pressure bleed or the old fashioned pump and hold?

2 people or one?

might have just (as other said) introduced air into the system.

Steve,

Ding ding ding. You are correct. I did not have the MC vent clamped off. Once I did that my pressure bleeder worked like a charm. I did get my wife to help me pump the brakes and there was a lot of air in the lines.

I am glad I was able to get it back on the road. My cousin is coming down tomorrow for the week and we were going to take a long run through the GA/TN mountains. It would not be as much fun in a Hyundai!!

Thanks again for the help.

Greg

Full pump strokes of the brake pedal, if you are bleeding manually are definitely destructive to internal M/C seals. 1/2 strokes only.

Yep...it says to clamp the vent right there in the Bentley manual. I should have paid more attention.

She must be handled gingerly.........thankful I read those posts BEFORE I engaged the fluid changout...was very careful to not provide any damaging opps to the worn seals,..I hope to settle in and get the rebuild done soon (still, of course, being respectful of pistons, seals (new), etc.)

You'll get her fixed!

Best,

Doyle
