Default Long term storage of catalytic converter and stock muffler

A few weeks ago I had my catalytic converter and stock muffler replaced with an M&K Pre-Muffler/Sport Muffler - (Which sounds awesome by the way!)

I am going to store my factory cat and muffler in case I ever need the cat or decide to put the stock muffler back on.

I'm going to clean off any surface rust, block off the pipes so no critters can get inside, and store in a cool dry place, most likely up high in my garage.

Is there anything else I should do for long term storage?
Does anyone know if the active material inside the cat will degrade over time?

Thanks!

No I don't think so. Mine has been off 15 years and looks perfect. More damage on the car rather than a storage facility for it.

That makes sense, of course.
As long as it stays dry and I can keep the rodents from making a home it should be fine. Most likely I'll never need it on the car again, but you never know...

Hey Paul,

Great perspective of your car in your avatar pic.
Nice colour too ;-)

Thanks Ian!
I was at VIR last weekend spectating at the Carolinas Region DE event and asking lots of questions to decide if I want to do a DE next year.

The shot was from the top of the bleachers.

Just make sure it's dry. The catalytic convertors use ceramic, silica, and platinum or palladium which will not oxidize or rust while sitting there.
