Default Value opinion 1986 930

I have an opportunity to buy a 1986 930 with 22,000 miles on the car. The car is all original except mods done to the motor. The mods to the motor are twin plug, bigger (K27) turbo, euro injectors, Electromotive Distrbutorless Ignition, B&B Headers and exhaust, upgraded suspension, extrude honed cylinder heads and intake, new upgraded valves and valve guides, euro cams, bigger intercooler. I am sure I am leaving some items out but these are the main things. The owner read an article in Panorama or Excellence on building the baddest 930. He built the car to specs from the article. Was told the car had 430 RWHP. The car is Guards Red/Black and a very nice example. It has only had around 5K put on it since the work was done.

Any ideas on value? I am a little scared to buy a car modded so much. He should of just left it alone IMHO. What's it worth

No way you're getting that much through CIS, for an otherwise usable street car. Sounds like the typical "rebuild it and bolt on a bunch of stuff" think from the mid-'90s. Does that mean it's bad? Not at all. But I'd certainly look at such a car as one that might need things disassembled and repaired sooner rather than later.

What's the appeal of a 930 in today's world, anyway?

Personally, I would not go for any engine that modified. People who run a modified engine RUN the car. Thus, you could have issues with that engine. A stock 930 is expensive enough to maintain properly--a custom one is ridiculous. (Ask me how I know).

I'd say upper 20's, though I am willing to bet the current owner sees his expensive mods as adding value to the car.

I had a nice 76 930, unmolested, 32k miles on it. It was expensive to own, and got about 9 miles to the gallon. It was amusing to drive for a few weeks but quickly lost its charm. Also, I had to fill up with gas every 100 miles.

If you want the king of turbos, save up a lot of money and buy a '94 3.6l.

Value is hard to place on something like this. If done well this thing could be a real beast - like bull riding; if you can stay on it for 8 seconds your good. Somebody is probably wanting a good price - maybe mid thirties. At whatever coin this car is on the market for...there are lots of other attractive cars I suspect. Be very careful. 5K after mods were performed means the novelty wore off pretty quick for the owner. I am being a bit presumptuous, but there's not much to go on here.

It wouldn't bother me if I knew who did the work and how the car was driven post mods. If the guy tracked the crap out of it I would be concerned. It sounds like the car I just bought sans the twin plugs. As long as your not on the boost all the time you're not hammering the bottom end.

Forget this one, too many mods. There are many great 100% stock 1986 turbos out there. Buy one of them.

There are never too many mods, as long as they were done right. Some people like cars bone stock and some like cars that were modified (tastefully and correct). The only way to no if it is a good car is to have a PPI done on it.

I appreciate all the informative comments. I know the 993 models very well, but not the 930's. I really don't mind the mods I just want to pay a fair price. I think there are 2 camps on the 930's. Stock and modified and each have positives and negatives. This is more about price than anything. I agree with JBrown here. A PPI will tell me the condition.

A ppi will only tell you whether the compression is good and if all the other visibles are good. I think this car should be discounted due to the motor.

PS- you'll probably get more pertinent replies in the 930 section on RL.

I've had 2 stock turbos and my modded one is much more fun! I'm with the guys above as mods are great as long as the person building the motor did a good job on it. Drive it and see if it is to your liking. IF it is, have a thorough PPI done on the car.

As for pricing, the turbo market is in the crapper. There was and probably still is a 86 930 with @ 27k for $20k. That car is modded with EFI... and the guy still can't sell the car.

You know this is my first 911 and I am impressed with the cruising range, I have had it a few months and just 420 miles off of the last tank. I know this is not a Prius but this sure hauls a^^ and I get the thumbs up at every red light. Love this car!

Normally aspirated (especially DME engines) and turbos are two wholly different animals, fuel economy wise. While I'm not sure what was going on with the 9 MPG/100 mile range on the above-mentioned turbo (9 MPG X 16 gal tank would give 150 miles), my 3.0 930 was hard pressed to go over 15 MPG in combo driving. Maybe the best I saw was 17-18 on an LA or Vegas trip at a constant 75 MPH.

As an aside, it's always 7 MPG on track with whatever displacement engine I've had in a 911.
