Backdating Candidate?
My friend is thinking of buying this car (no affiliation except to my friend) to use as a donor to make 73 RS replica (or clone). Thoughts on it, and pricing?

I glanced over the ad and thought..."nice car". I love the backdate projects myself. It all comes down to just how far the tribute is taken. I REALLY like the ones with early interior, gauges, etc. Most importantly, a nicely built high revving motor that sings like the early cars do. That can be difficult with carb restrictions however. None of it's cheap if done correctly. To answer your question, it looks like a real nice car at a glance.

That price seems a little high to me. I paid just above 20k for my car. It had around 74k miles on it when I got it. I have 79k on the odometer now. If I could get 23.5 for it, I'd think that was a more than fair offer. With the miles on that car, I'd think a good bit less on the price. Nice car though. I like the white fuchs!

Looks like a nice 911. Seems a little high price perhaps. If your friend is going for a real replica (i.e. inside and out and motor etc) than this would be a lot of money for a solid body (most everything else will be replaced). However, it would be a better base for a tribute car.

So you are +/- $25,000 into the project before you even get started? You are taking a sawzall to the body of a perfectly stunning 911 to make a chopped up reproduction. I don't follow that logic at all. Can't say what I really think in polite company.
If you aren't doing the fenders and longhood why not just get this one and save yourself years of headaches, busted knuckles, and mucho bucks???

Here's a '73 VIN that is literally right down the street from me.

Well Ben, there's a few opinions for you. My opinion is that if the work is done correctly, it's not hacking/molesting/screwing up the car. I really like the early cars and that includes a correctly done tribute; this is totally my opinion however. A big investment on the front end of such a project begs the responsibility of following through with the commitment. Certainly not cheap from any angle. I personally like a 74 model and they lend themselves well to such a project, and in Cali. they are CARB exempt so you have tons of options for a motor. There are a ton of tired SCs out there for such an endeavor, but your buddy may want the G50/AC/drivability of a later car. You may want to search for Rennlist member RJT, Her and her husband are tastefully backdating a Carrera and have some really good posts about the project here on Rennlist. It is a well done cosmetic recreation based on a superb later car intended for daily driving/touring/travel. You'll find lots of emotions around these cars.
