Default Revisiting the Motor Meister issue

Ten years ago when I moved to California MM had issues all over the web. I was building a motor at the time, so I added them to my Sh.t list.... The last post on here about all that was quite a while ago (2007). MM actually advertises to rebuild the water cooled P-Cars!
So what is the modern day opinion of this company? Have they learned from their mistakes and become a good rebuild co.?
I am pre-programmed and see MM motors, and I immediately think it is bad, but is it? Companies grow and change.
What is the experience today?
I am looking at a car for sale, they have a MM sticker on the fan housing, I thought "no.......", but should I go there? What is the MM experience today?

A Tiger doesn't change its stripes
Old habits die hard
You can't teach an old dog new tricks
Set in one's ways
The more things change, the more they stay the same

I'd not want to risk my money on something they touched.

Lisa,

Listen to Ed,

He has a wealth of experience and I feel safe in saying that he wouldn't steer you in the wrong direction. Plenty of Rennlist 'longtimers' feel the same way about MM. That has to speak for itself

JMHO (after seeing the internals of a few examples of their "service"),...

Run,....... I mean run! as fast and far away from them as quickly as possible.

There are FAR FAR better rebuilders out there.

Caveat Emptor applies here, in spades.

I dunno, you might want a motor that has been "rebuilt" with used parts, right?

In fact, one may think their quality to get worse over time. IF, and only IF, there was one honest bone in a body among them, they'd use the "good" used parts first, then as time goes on, they'll start throwing more and more of the "not-so-good" used parts into their builds.

Hi Ed... Hope yer doing well out there in Southern Cal. We miss ya out here in Texas :-(

At 107K my 3.6 has developed a nasty bottom-end knock. I afraid the engine is toast :-( New engines are now $17k, yikes.... Trying to figure out how not to spent $20k. on a car that is worth $30k with a good engine.

I'm going to to keep it. It's been a blast and reliable since I got it with 9k miles.

Any thoughts?

All the best,

Kevin Hughes

Nothing is more scary then seeing a MM sticker or a VMC sticker on a car you're looking to buy.

Hey Kevin:

Good to hear from you, but sorry to hear about the engine. It would seem that there would be used motors available, but that wouldn't really solve anything, as you still have the risk of getting a similar issue. I have no idea what a used 996 motor would go for-you may only save a few$?? What does a used GT3 motor run? Could you slot one of them in without a lot of mods? You could maybe buy the whole setup off a wrecked GT3, but you're back to spending a sizable sum with the risk of a used engine still.

What kind of warranty do the new motors come with? In the grand scheme of things, that is not a lot more than an intensive rebuild of an 80's 3.2? So, if she's a keeper, it may be worthwhile in the long run.

I would volunteer Ed's help, but since it's a 996
