Revisiting the Motor Meister issue

I will work on a photo when it stops raining.
I have an 82 SC Targa, located here on a small island off the Malaysian coast called Langkawi.
Great roads, no speed cameras, freindly police, and the Malaysian F1 Circuit open for track days every week.
I have purchased a used 3.0 SC engine in the states, and am looking for somewhere to have it overhauled and upgraded, then shipped out here to use for track days.
As i do all of the maintenance and repairs to my car (nobody here has ever seen a Porsche before), i need to keep it compatible with my 915 transmission, and not too complex an injection system.
What can Ed's garage offer??

What state is the motor in. (It's location, not it's condition) There are great shops everywhere.
If it's on the west coast we got you covered, east coast the same. We have great site sponsors who can do exactly what you need.
Most importantly post pictures.
.....and Ed's Garage.... Top notch work

I would strongly recommend that you have a good oil cooling system on your car, given your climate and kind of use your car will get. That means a radiator cooler, instead of the loop cooler, with air ducted to it.

My 03 Boxster S just had a catastrophic IMS bearing failure after only 13k miles. I am looking for options and the big bore 3.8 from MM was looking pretty good...but after a few hours of poking around here, I am feeling cautious again.
Has anyone had one of these Big Bore conversions done?

wow you definitely need the boxster forum .. you must be one of those imaginary guys cause Porsche says this is not a real issue at all ... sorry about your loss. As you probably know your engine is probably a total loss .. you should look at seeing if you can put a 996 engine in it maybe ?

Well, I did send my car to MM, especially when I found out that my local, highly reputable P shop, would send the engine (okay, maybe just my engine) to MM as well. I have no real bad news to report, you decide for yourself.
1) The car has been there about a year....still not being worked on. I wasn't in a rush, but this was unexpected. Paid $3K on a estimated ~$10K rebuild.
2) Turn-over at their front desk.... the 4th person I've talked to. The latest person said that the others may not have been up to the task/responsibilites of the position.
3) Sent them an autorization to proceed 11/2010. Signed off on the price, including a few extras (up-sells) but thought it fair. Resent it to them in 3/2011 after they said they didn't get it. Resent it again in 8/2011..... same document, same signatures.... odd, eh?
4) Price? that is up to you, personal choice, what your budget will allow. I asked them, as an extra, to repair the speedo, since the odomoter has just stopped workiing. You know that little gear? They quoted $250 for the speedo repair + labor (that they don't repair themselves anyway.) That would be the $125 the local LA speedo shop (from Rennlist) to repair with a 1 day turn-around/shipping included, and say $125-$190 for labor to remove from the dash (slide out) and re-install. Good margins if you can get em.
I went to the shop personally in LA before sending my car there. Sure there are old cars around, there were also newer cars, but by the time I left, was convinced, that they could do a good job, knew what they were doing, and given the opportunity, would do a "fair" job (as in best and fair.) Especially because my P shop was willing to send the engine to them, themselves. Perhaps I'm impatient, do you think a year is enough opportunity to get the repair completed? Complete rebuild...spun a bearing. (have the piston/rod/bearing to prove it.) Still patient after all these months and remaining cautiously optomistic.
Turn-over just two more front desk people and we can have had a volley ball team. kz

Ten years ago when I moved to California MM had issues all over the web. I was building a motor at the time, so I added them to my Sh.t list.... The last post on here about all that was quite a while ago (2007). MM actually advertises to rebuild the water cooled P-Cars!
So what is the modern day opinion of this company? Have they learned from their mistakes and become a good rebuild co.?
I am pre-programmed and see MM motors, and I immediately think it is bad, but is it? Companies grow and change.
What is the experience today?
I am looking at a car for sale, they have a MM sticker on the fan housing, I thought "no.......", but should I go there? What is the MM experience today?

You keep saying fair, yet these jerkoffs can't process paperwork? They can get your engine running, but the way they do that with a hodgepodge of used parts and half-assed is what they are known for. Are you for real, or are you that stupid to ignore the well-publicized issues with MM.
Oh wait, maybe they came down with a case of ethics, and do a good job now.

Over the years, I have found Steve Weiner to be both knowledgeable and honorable
If I was shipping my engine for a rebuild, it would be addressed to Rennsport in Portland OR.
Support the good guys!
