Default 1970 Targa S value?

Another newbie here...but figured i would ask the experts before wasting time on what may be a bad deal. I have a mechanic friend who has done about 12k in work to a 1970 911 targa S the seller now cannot afford to pay ( this has been going on for a few years) and so my friend is getting title to the car. It needs maybe another 3-4k to get into solid order but my question is what is the value range for these cars? Car overall is in good condition and has had a lot of mechanical work done. it is not numbers matching but still an S engine. I've seen ranges from 20k-100k ( gooding auction). My friend just wants his money for work done so I could get it all in for maybe 15k. I have a few vintage cars (all italian) and if i get a 911s for this price it Seems like limited downside but I just don't know much about vintage 911s. Also what should I look out for? Engine size/type, etc. Thx guys.

Rust is the major issue with these early cars, if car is solid it's a no brainer for anything less than $30K.

Agreed here. Pix would help. Is the car an "S" or just the engine? With the S engine these are great cars to drive.

I saw the car a week ago, it was on the lift but it looks like an original S and the mechanic says it is also an S engine but its just not the numbers matching original S engine. What is the best way to make sure that this is an original S car vs some retrofitted base car? Is there a way to tell from the VIN? or should I get a Porsche COA? I wont be able to post pics for at least another week as im headed out of town but will do so when i get them. I just ordered Zimmerman's book as well. Thanks in advance for the help.

The VIN should tell you. Google search "911 VIN code", or go to the early S registry websight and I think they will give you the decode info. On the surface, that could be a great car. Depending on your Italian stable, an earlly 2.2 S will blow your mind.
Values are all over the map on a car like this. Sheet metal condition is a big issue, and would determine the value. The early cars are valued more on potential these days instead of condition which is more emotional than logical. You will be find if you keep your head out of the clouds and deal in hard numbers for real hardware. Without any more info/pictures, 15K-25K maybe.

If this car is indeed a '70S Targa and is not a total rust bucket (or have turbo flairs, etc.) you will have no down side at $15K even without the original engine.

Can't wait to see the photos as those will tell us if the car is somewhat original. The VIN for this car should be 911031XXXX. I am curious what the engine is really. A correct 2.2S engine will have a serial # of 630XXXX or 631XXXX. Both will be stamped with the type # 911/02

Ed, a 76S is a different animal value-wise than a 70S. A 70S coupe will sell for north of $50k in decent condition and approach $90 - $100k in pristine condition.

I don't know what a Targa S will bring....

True, but that is not a bad looking 76.
A 70S north of 50K better be perfect.
But thats my opinion. These cars are stratospheric in asking prices; we've all seen them. But those same cars tend to be on the market a long time. I'm curious what they are trading hands for in the real world. There is a lot of fluff in the early car market. They are exceptional cars in so many ways in the end.
