I think many of your points are reinforced here on a regular basis with regard to "r&r" of various aspects of these cars.

Best,

Jay

P.S., if I had to choose just one Porsche to keep, I'd have to keep the 1984...
I'm still here! It's been quite the enjoyable read! I've also been reading a lot of the older 964 vs. 911 and 915 vs. G50 threads. I ordered Peter Zimmermann's book and the Red Book so I'll have some more reading to do shortly. Looking forward to my homework!

Right now, I must say I'm leaning toward a 3.2 car since the idea of a more pure, basic, no-frills sports car is appealing to me. Plus, I suppose it is the era in which I "grew up" but when I think Porsche, the image in my mind is a mid-80s 911 with Fuchs and a whale tail.

I plan to check in with some of the local specialty shops too. Any suggestions for the Mpls/St. Paul area? I've heard of Flat Six in Bloomington, German Autoworks in St. Louis Park and Top Gear Autoworks in Mpls. I plan on doing as much of my own work as possible but I figure it's a good idea to get to know the shops anyway. Plus, they may know of cars for sale, etc.

Thanks to all here for sharing so much insight! I'm sure I'll be lurking about for a long time...and probably asking many more questions (afer I search the archives, of course!).

Their only big weak link they didn't have before is the radiators, which are kind of hanging out there in a venerable spot. If crash one even a little bit and the raditor takes a hit you are probably done because even if you do get back to the pits without overheating it they are not terribly easy to replace. However, otherwise they have rock soild reliablity. They just don't seem to break.

And in some classes they are racing against full tube chassis 6+ liter V8s.

well, yes and no. Porsche has used water cooling for decades on various cars and have experiance in this. It may have been an isssue long ago.
In 2000, benz released the new S-lass(w220), and the C-class(w203). Both had coolers for A/C, oil, and water very low behind the front bumper cover. I asked a benz engineer if that was a good idea on a street car...he replied that surprisingly, that the frontal area is a good place for such as it is easy to protect????? I don't know but they've thought about it.

It was an issue on the 997 race cars with the radiators in the front corners. A not-too-serious shunt could be fatal. I believe they made some changes for the 2010 cars, and it did not seem to be much of an issue this year.

I know I'm late to the party, but I'll add my $.02 here (mostly because I'm trying to kill time at work). I'll sum it up in two points:

1) Dynamically, I liked my C4 better than any SC / Carrera 3.2 I owned. Man that car could pull. Loved the grip (even with the understeer). Definitely a serious machine.

2) In the few months I owned the 964, I spent more in service / maintenance than I spent on all of my previous 911's service and maintenance put together. Granted, I got a high mileage, poorly cared for car. But there you go...

...and now back to work I go.

What the heck happened man?

That was short lived. I still remember the post were you just purchased the 964.

A high mileage 964 poorly cared for is ripe for money money money

Did you forget the golden rule?

There is nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche.

Tru dat yo. I just couldn't spend any more money. Every time I thought I had it "sorted" something else popped up. I was literally driving it from shop to shop. I got fed up and dumped it. Never again.
