Bit of a scare
on my way in this a.m. I had the car wound up and zipping along, fans on high (its the rainy season in Seattle already) and all of the sudden I hear this horrible noise....can't be me, its in front of me....OH must be that ricer car I am coming up on, must have one of those fart can exhausts..... NOOOO
it is me! - smells HOT !!
slam on the skids, hit the flashers and off to the shoulder, shut it down !!!
????????
some quick diagnosis and there is a fan (the one controled by the large red **** between the seats) on the drivers side near the windshield making a horrible noise...not sure how to describe it, but it aint good. I will have it checked out tonight, in the meantime all is well, just wont run the aux fan...
WHEW!!

The blower motor comes out, then use a needle nose pliers to remove the clips, and take the screws out to disassemble the plastic blower assembly, and the plastic squirrelcage is only pressed on, so you can carefully pull it off the motor after carefully measuring and noting the gap spacing of the fan in the housing. Some aerosol electric parts cleaner, and a dab of chain lube in my case on the bushing.
The squirrel cage must not hit the inside of the blower - this is critical, so make sure it's centered and test fit everything before assembly. I "glued" the squirrel cage fan onto the motor shaft with some loctite applied to the fan before assembly.
There is a thread on Pelican that talks about this, with some pictures.

Yup!!! I think I saw an engine compartment fire in the heater blower of an SC either here or on Pelican, and the AC auxilary blower also catches fire.

I might just gut out the fan housing to allow more airflow.

I went through the lube process several times (with tentative success) ,..and I can assure you, you're destined for a replacement in the future. In the meantime, best be damned sure they're fused (not sure if your year came that way).
I'm presently shopping for 2 replacements, as mine are noisey (again) and I'm tired of dicking around with them. NEW ones aren't cheap.
Best,
Doyle
