I have a 911 convertible (2001). When mashing the top down rocker, the windows go down, the top unlatches, the back comes up, but the top does not go down. Any and all comments appreciated.

the cab tops on the 964 series do on occasion pose issues (cables, motors, misalignment)....
you should post up on the 964 forum (you are on the 911 forum, which represents pre 964 series & where cabs "were simpler to operate & smarter").

This is putting the top down? I had a 328ic that had a similar problem and I think it was dues to the tension straps stretching with age. If the tension straps are tight, the top should retract properly. When you are pushing the button, does the top start to go down with a light assist in pushing the top back?

996 cabs use hydrolic pressue pump and "rams" to open the top. It's a great system over the old cable drives. I don't remember the details, but it is probably a microswitch. There are dozens of them that tell the top what to do. This includes the rear deck being closed. The Porsche factory computer can tie in with the top control unit and read what all the switches are doing - this is the quick way of finding it. I hate to say "take it to your shop", but it is probably something real simple.

Do you mean coupe(dare I ask)? The 996 cab opperation was a huge inprovement over the air-cooled top-drive...but I get your point and I would live with the older top before I would live with a 996.
edit: No offence to the original poster of this thread, a 996 is a fine car.

On a related matter, I had my top on from washing Ruby last weekend. I had to take her in for smog today, and since it was cool and pretty foggy, I kept it on. I don't usually drive with the top unless I have a helmet on. I was downright claustrophobic this morning! I'm addicted to open top motoring.
On a related note to this, I should have had a helmet on today, but I had to cancel my TT at Buttonwillow this weekend, as I had an unexpected trip this week and off to Seattle early next week. I may foregoe the GT3 or whatever is on my horizon so I can retire soon!

Good. So the "air-cops" busted you, but the theives that jacked your stuff have yet to reply voluntarily.
IIRC you did get violated after your were on the side of the road for a few minutes, right?

I'm not sure what thieves? I had a rental broken into in SF in June. When I was out doing some accel/decel runs to seat the rings is when a "conscientious" citizen took the time to report me to the Calif Air Resources Board. I must've impinges on their drive in their Prius.
