Default 89 3.2 headlight question

I have an 89 3.2 Carerra with what can be best described as wimpy headlights. This, along with my wimpy night vision, make for intersting night driving experiences. I have looked over the forums and realize that there are solutions out there but has anyone got a simple solution. I've read about Marcus Sucro's relay kit but have had no luck in making contact with him. How do I get in touch with him? That seems to be the first step in lighting up the night. After that, new bulbs?? I don't want to repaint the headlight rings, nor do I want to totally replace the headlight assembly. Help.

My '89 was that way when I first got her. I made NO lighting mods other than the relay mod (SUCRO's stuff). Just gave the assemblies a good cleaning, fresh bulbs and reworked the outer part of the lens.

This winter I'm considering increasing the wattage on the bulbs but NOT without upgrading the gauge of all relative wires first. I just never could get myself to actually changeout the assembly (as many do). At least I know all of the headlamp currents are flowing through some hefty relay contacts now (minimal voltage drop) and not as the German's first designed it.

Bottom line: if you're not up to other assemblies of different designs, then wattage is you're only friend and/or bulb selections. Don't make the mistake of just throwing some higher wattage bulbs (even with the kit installed) and "calling it a day",..ignoring the wire gauge that's needed for that approach,..

........just my 2 cents.

Best,

Doyle

I think this mod (see pic) would help. Jokes apart. Change to Euro H4 lamps, install relay kit and use 80/100Watt and +1 for Doyle's comment on not making the mistake of just switching to higher wattage bulbs and ignoring the wire gauge that's needed.

JWest Engineering sells relay kits too, about $25 IIRC.

You can look for a set of H1's too, although they are rare and expensive. Probably the best light ever on a 911.

You can also just wire up two automotive 4-prong relays. The JWest kit is very slick and has some really bulletproof connectors. If you have a pre-84, with the swivel head foglights, then you can put some 100 watt flamethrowers under the front bumber, but you will get a ticket for sure the first time a cop catches you. I have gotten away with installing airplane landing lights on mine for middle of the night runs to the coast.

I've used both the Sucro kit and the kit sold by Pelican. The Pelican kit uses neat connectors,..possibly like the JW kit so was maybe a bit easier to put together and both used similarly heavy guage wire. I didn't find that the relay did anything to enhance the light produced by the stock H5s and stock bulbs. Cleaning helped a little, BUT,..once I installed the H4s with higher wattage bulbs (50/80 I think),...there was a big difference. Once the relays are installed and you have thoroughly cleaned the inside of the lense, a higher wattage bulb may be all you need,..but as others have pointed out, H4 and H1 are always an option. It's a fun project.
