Fan on oil cooler
I bought a SPAL fan to put on the oil cooler of my 85 911 with a manual switch. Purchased it from RacerWholesale based on a Rennlisters recommendation. Got the #292 which is a 5.6 inch fan for a good price. Got the puppy in my hands and the diameter is fine but its almost 4 inches deep.
Has anyone done this modification to their car that did not have it from the factory and would a fan this depth fit in the fender and on the cooler? The only way I can see to do this is to relocate the horns. If this is what has to be done, where is everyone sticking them?
TIA,
Joe

Joe,
When I installed an SPAL fan on an Earl's cooler in the right front fender, I went with the 7" fan (#393) which is only 2" deep. In order to fit it, I made use of 1/2" bar stock (available at Home Depot) to get from mounting points on the lower fan supports to the body. At least one of the upper supports was directly tied to the horn mounting bracket. I had to move one horn totally off the fender horn bracket. I used the bar stock to fashion an "L" shaped bracket, and mounted it on the bumper extension in front of the right front wheel well. I made an extension piece, as I recall, to move the other horn forward away from the fan, with one end connected to the fender horn bracket, and the other end to the horn. If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll draw something and post it.

Bill,
Thanks for the info. Doesnt the 7" fan hang over the sides of the oil cooler? Mine seems to measure around 6" wide. Wish we had some sort of CFM data on the fans as well.
The arrangement of the horns does not seem like a problem. I had not thought of mounting them inside the bumper like everyone is mentioning. I used to do a lot of sheetmetal work and can get "creative" when needed.
Thanks, and may get back to you on a diagram.

Joe,
I checked two web sites, and the 5.6" fan moves 300CFM (what you have), the 6.5" moves 330CFM, and the 7.5" moves 440CFM (What I had). For my 911, I put the largest Earl's cooler I could fit in the wheel well, and the fan fit it well. I don't remember any overhang. Although a good improvement, this combo wasn't enough to keep it cool on the track, so I ended up going with a front valance-mounted cooler, and now all is well under any conditions.

Bill and John,
Thanks for the help and information. Been busy at work lately and no time to get on the net. Will go from here and find a place to mount the horns.
Thx,
Joe
