Post 17 year old buying 911......is it possible??

some of you might remember me from about 5 months ago.

I brought up the question "should I buy a 944 or a TURBO II RX-7."

Well as it turns out I went with the RX-7, however I could not find a TURBO II so I bought a naturally aspirated (1990 model). It is a nice car and with the exception of a few minor things it has been reliable. I have done all the maintenance on it myself also.

my porsche obsession is back though. I have modded my RX-7 quite a bit to increase performance
but it still does not matter. I WANT A PORSCHE!

I have worked full time at a Porsche dealership and will probably do the same again this coming summer.

I got to know the technician pretty well and could get good deals on parts.

I have driven many different Porsches; 911, 914, 924, 928, 944 (not 951 though ) and many boxsters.

My favorite though has always been the 911. I want your opinions on if i should go ahead and spend most of my money and go for a 911.

I would prefer something like a 78 SC.

I am only 17, however I have owned three cars, all paid for by me. (1 acura integra, 2 Mazda RX-7's)

I do most of the maintinance on my RX-7 and I am aware that the 911 is a high maintenance car like my rotary powered RX-7.

So should I go ahead and go for a 911? It would do great in autocrossing this season

Back when I was 17, they only had cars that went fast in a straight line. If I had a 911 when I was 17 I would have probably killed myself. That said, go for it. The early 911's are owner friendly when it comes to the DIYer.

Go for it!!! I bought my baby just out of high school (17-1/2 at the time) and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Sounds like you have a good handle on things and some good contacts. Find the 911 you want, buy it and dont look back.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Hey, RS:

Good thinking, asking people on the 911 forum if you should buy a 911. Now go ask people at the RX-7 forum.

It's probably a good thing I didn't have a Porsche at your age (same for a motorcycle). I never would have put in the education and work time it took to make me what I am today; first banjo in the Floyd County Sympathy Orcastra.

You sound like a car guy. It's important to a car guy's overall life satisfaction for to own the cars they really want.

Hope you find a great one.

17 and you're lookin' at your first Porsche!
At 17 I was a jackeroo sitting in a lonely saddle on a horse named Stupid, droving a mob of beef on "the long paddock" southern NSW.
The saddle of a Norton Commando was (still is) my dream and I doubt that I could spell "Porsche" back then.
The best on offer was the occasional Holden Ute that blew by through a cloud of bull dust.

Like Jim, somewhere along the way I took a longer view and went back for further education and a long list of "stupid" forgettable automobiles and wasted $$$$.
I wish I had the foresight to aim for the Porsche marque back then, as you are now.
So, stop reading my middle aged envious crap and re-read Dans advice! <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />
Have FUN.
