Post Thinking about 1987 turbo look cabriolet

for the weekends. My kids would like to have a convertible (so would I).

How reliable and what is the performance like. This case has 66,000 miles, is chipped, B&B triflow exhaust, K&N and is well maintained. Any idea on hp with those modifications. Will these hurt reliability.

Also, what problems if any should I look for and are there any better years for this model? Thanks for you help in advance. I am having the car inspected tomorrow.

If you are considering a used 911, go buy the Porsche 911 Buyers guide by Randy Leffingwell. The book will pay for itself in the money that you save with it.

For 1987, according to this book...the Turbo Look Cab gets a slightly lower mark for acceleration due to the extra weight that the turbo look add, 110 lbs.

SAE HP was 217, but thats not counting the mods to that particular car. That is the first year of the G50 transmission, which is a big plus.

Things to look for on the 87 are: rotting fuel lines, worn valve guides, stiff hydraulic clutch if not updated

Should be a good car. There is a black 87 Turbo look Cab down the road from me and is stickered at $27K on the dealers lot...has 100K miles.

You may want to check if that is a factory Turbo look and not an after market. It probably is.

The '78 to '83 SCs and the '84 to '89 Carreras are some of the most reliable Porsches out there. If this one has truly been well taken care of, it should last a good long time. Perfromance mods can exagerate abuse, but just having them shouldn't really hurt reliability. Find out more how this car was used.

Mods listed will probably add another 10-15 hp. Maybe?

Get a good PPI. Could be a great car!

I have a 1987 cab - non turbo look. make sure it's original, not aftermarket - should be option code m0491 (I believe). Mine's plenty fast enough - Check for resonance at 2300-3300 rpm's with the B & B - that would drive me crazy in a cab!

With those mods engine should be close to the 240-250 mark. get a PPI.

Yes, the upgraded tranny in a 87 + is a good route to go. How much are they asking for that cab? My friend is selling his 90 C4 Black Cab with 61k miles for $23,995 or best offer.

Yo, Sonic db,

Where are you located? A triple black cab...if the dealer will work on the price and my trade of a 944S2 Cab I would want to take a look. TIA.

Thanks for the help guys. I am having an inspection performed today on it. The car itself is extremely clean both inside and out.

The black turbo cab sounds great. I would be real interested also.

Douglas:

Probably 25k. I am waiting to make sure everything checks out. My main focus is on something very clean with a great interior at this point.

Craig,

The car is at a dealer called Caseys Classics on Pacific Coast Hwy in Hermosa Beach, CA.

Its really sharp on the outside and inside....$27K is a little high, imo but not too bad according to BAs price guide.

Also, they have a really sharp sky blue 1976 911S which has 150K. I dont know what they are asking for that one.

Its a long way from St. Louis.

27K for a Turbo Look Cab at 100K seems a little high - but they also are pretty sought after. I think there was a red one on e-bay a few days ago - 60K miles with a buy it now of $28500 - Here it is... 1987 Cab Check out the other cars in the garage!

Here's an 1988 Turbo Look Cab (In Nashville, no less!

Would I buy a Porsche off e-bay? Maybe if I could arrange a pre=purchase inspection first. More likely if the reserve wasn't met I would try and strike up a deal after the auction ended. My buddy did this and picked up a mint 1992 Cab. Anyway - good luck looking - that's one of the fun parts!

The '87-89 models are one of the most sought after. When I was looking for one I was told about the G50 transmission upgrade for the '87 year and to seek out a manual vs power cabriolet top if possible due to the finicky operation. In the case of the Turbo-look they're probably all power but that shouldn't really affect your decision. I was just plain lucky that when I finally found the perfect car it had a manual top!

These are pretty reliable, I did replace the clutch at 40k miles but other than that it was solid. Sold it at 50k miles. I was the second owner and never asked which type of exhaust it had (it was not stock and had dual exhaust). I loved the sound, but maybe a tad too loud.

The white one was the one I had checked out this morning. Turned out it needed some work (differential and valve job). They guy said the car would be incredible if this work was done. Don't want to hassle with it even if he came off the price to cover the work.

I am having the red inspected tomorrow. We will see. He is firm on the buy now price of $ 28,500.00. What do you guys think about the red for $ 28,500. Should I keep looking for a better deal or does that car seem to be pretty nice looking and decent miles for a 1987.

Thanks again for the input.

I think the Red one is the nicer of the two. I think for $28500 and 60k miles it is in line with others that I have seen.
