You can just bend the older hinges. Or if you want to get fancy, you can cut them and widen them. I don't think the 964 hinges will help matters, but I'm not certain about that. The 964 hinges were spaced about an inch wider than the previous decklid hinges to accommodate the retractable spoiler mechanism.
I don't know if anyone has ever succeeded in coming up with a speed sensitive switch that works like the 964 and later cars had. The simplest way to control it manually is with a power window switch. You can also wire in a load-sensing circuit (there are aftermarket ones that are used to make power windows 'one touch') that will allow you to just bump the switch and have the wing raise or lower.
You'll notice a very small difference in high speed stability with the wing (it's comparable to a ducktail). But you'll also see an improvement in engine cooling.
Jack, thanks I recall you ran one on that black beast..
Agree on a manual switch, the 964 is activated by ABS sensor so without ABS I guess a Pitol tube or air flow switch could work as the auto speed sender
I picked up a mint engine lid, had it repainted and spent the best part of 10 hrs trimming it to fit The original hinges need a 25mm spacer either side where they attach to the chassis, you also need a watchmakers number 3 on the bodywork inside the engine to get the hinge to clear.
The hinges need 12mm spacers between them and the lid, I used multiple strips of alloy.
Next is wiring it up, thankfully a prior post by Jack Olsen provides a diagram.
