Thanks all for your kind support. Went to the workshop and checked that the tranny oil was changed recently. Then the mechanic noticed the clutch pedal was spongy in its first part of the travel... therefore an issue with the hydraulic may be the root of the shifting problems. Didn`t have the time to leave the car there until I come back from vacation, so we pumped up the system with the clutch pedal and thereafter I was able to shift into first without major difficulty!

Wil, keep you posted once we start purging the hydraulic and see whether that was the issue.
