Cool Dyno sheet of new 3.2 MFI motor

Greetings Rennlisters:

Saturday I picked up my '72 T with a newly installed MFI 3.2 motor. It is quite incredible and raw; truly a visceral experience as the tach climbs past 7k rpms.

Here is a link to a recent dyno run when the motor was intstalled in the "builders" car (note that is "rwhp"!):
Dyno Sheet 3.2 MFI Motor

I would to thank Mark Kinninger and the good folks over at Black Forest for a job well done. These guys are a class act and I would strongly recommend them to anyone.

Basically this motor was built on an Al 930 case (shuffle pinned and boat-tailed) with the high compression Mahle p/c set, Carrera oil pump, 906 cams, magnesium stacks and a modified (by Pacific Injection) RS MFI pump - heads were opened up to 38mm recently. It also has Raceware on the heads and the rods as well as AASE springs and Ti retainers - pressure fed tensioners round out the package.

Mark modified my OEM style Dansk SS muffler by taking out some of the innards and adding a second larger pipe out the passenger's side - he also replaced the driver's side pipe with a larger diameter tube. It's running SSIs now and I hope to get the larger diameter exchangers when SSI has them ready.

For oil cooling a B&B cooler was added and Aeroquip 12 hose was used to plumb the sucker; the oil console was machined for an internal thermostat for a very clean job.

I also had 21/27 torsion bars added and did the bushings (poly-graphite "street" compound) on the front A-arms to match the previously done Neatrix on the rear spring plates. And, finally, I had a Black Forest strut brace installed.

I really can't express how exhilirating this car is to drive! And it is a nice treat after the previous ordeal I endured from that certain shop that some may have learned about on the mailing list and over at Pelican.

I will have some pictures to post in the next few days, but for now the dyno sheet will give a glimpse into the motor that now powers my new "girlfriend".

Sorry for drooling all over the board, but I just wanted to share this very happy time with some other good folks who can appreciate what I am experiencing now.

Best to all!

Kurt

Kurt, The Dyno sheet is impressive. I am green with envy I only see one problem with that list of mods, no brake upgrade. All that engine will have to stop some how. Look forward to the posted pics and I am glad that you and yours are together again.

Brakes?

Well, this girl has been quite demanding on the wallet lately but she will get proper brakes when finances allow.

Presently I have rebuilt S calipers on the front with ventilated/cross drilled rotors and SS lines and the stock Ms on the back. This is fine for the street . . . so far.

When I recover from the expense she will probably get the early Turbo 917 style brakes at all corners. I would like to give the very knowledgable and kind Steve Weiner some business on the brakes since I was unable to buy an RS style 3.6 motor from him because of a costly personal situation (say "divorce"!)

After that, if I'm not in the poor house, I will look for a set of R wheels or maybe get some of those fancy three piece Fuchs in the proper offset that Mr. Olsen has been eyeing.

Thanks for the kind words Dan!

Best,

Congratulations, Kurt. 300+ hp is absolutely amazing. It sounds awesome. We'll have to get you up to L.A. for a canyon run or maybe a trip out to Willow Springs.

I'll be in the other black car, slowly retreating toward the horizon in your rearview mirror.

By the way, Ill be bugging you in the near future for a little more detail on those suspenion/handling/brake mods. Hoping to do some stuff early fall, depending on $ flow, on my baby. Probably be looking for alot of advice when the time comes from here and Pelican. Would like to do a few DE soon. See ya and have fun with all those horses.

Well Jack, my Dad always told me that "it's the Indian, not the arrow" and that adage would certainly hold true regarding any "showdown" between Black Beauty and my yet unnamed girl.

Although my new girl may have a p/w ratio advantage to your girl, my serious track time dates back to the late 80s while you have much more recent track experience. I have little doubt that your experience coupled with your car's wider and more balanced stance would take the day at any track.

While I plan on trying to improve the braking capabilities coupled with 7" wheels, my car will never be a track star. It was built to be a street monster with hopes of surprising a later model car or two around my neighborhood.

It was also built in the spirit of the early race cars that, like the "R", had narrow bodies, high revving motors and produced mechanical melodies that could put some "wood" in one's trousers.

And Dan, feel free to query me regarding any questions you may have. I can only tell you what I have learned from folks much smarter and wiser than I regarding tuning the venerable early cars.

Best,

Cambria, then.

And if you are willing to put a bra on it and take it out on a beautiful (and safe) track, then you should consider bringing it up to Thunderhill June 26th. Thom Fitzpatrick will be there with his 1977 3.6 transplant. If I can interest a few other southsiders, we could caravan up for a great day of listening to the siren song of the flat six, and shooting into turn one at 130 mph:

(And in my opinion, your brakes are fine. You're only going to run into fade problems on a track. And even then, it's going to only happen if you're out for longer-than-normal sessions. Your car may be powerful as all get-out, but it's also light as a feather.)

Kurt,

Your dyno sheet is an inspiration to us all. I am just awestruck by the power you are producing out of your motor.

Is SSI producing larger diameter heat exchangers??
Any idea when that is supposed to happen?
