Question Looking for audio system advice ...

My '89 911 Carrera 3.2 has Blaupunkt Reno (Opt 158) with Options 490, Hi-Fi Sound System, and 494, rear shelf speakers. The problem is that the speakers are very noisy - treble-range crashes (DUCK!! WHAT THE HEY!), distortion, etc. I really can't hear too well due to Pratt & Whitney disease, or maybe it was that afternoon with a 45 Automatic so I'm not a serious audiophile. I would just like to be able to listen to AM/FM radio and cassette tapes without all the racket.

Any recommendations on speaker replacement? I really don't intend to do anything else with the system, except possibly install a real antenna. Anybody done that on windshield-wire equipped cars?

Crutchfield has a nice selection of speakers, and can probably help with what would fit. They're at www.crutchfield.com. Rod Birch of Car Audio Innovations has done wonders with custom Porsche systems. His customers seem very happy with his work. His website is at http://www.caraudioinnovations.com. (I've bought from Crutchfield over the years; haven't personally dealt with Rod at Car Audio Innovations)

Count me as one of Rod's very happy customers. I went with his subwoofer enclosure + rear speaker replacements + amp replacement. It has transformed my audio system.

If you're just looking to replace the existing components, Rod can steer you in the right direction. He won't try to sell you more than you want and/or need.

Rod knows audio, and he knows 911's. He can recommend good quality & bang for the buck components that will work well with your 911. Definitely give him a call!

ROD BURCH IS A GOOD MAN!

Rod help me with my 87 Targa by upgrading the security system, remote control door locks and new speakers throughout the the vehicle.

Months later when I needed some advice, Rod drove over to my house and helped me at no extra charge.

There are very few people that will do as much as Rod!

I use a/d/s/ in my cars, but I also know that Rod Birch has quite a reputation. I haven't had the pleasure of doing business with him, but have conversed with him via e-mail a few times and he seems very knowledgeable. He's also a heck of a nice guy.

Your biggest problem is going to be getting good bass in the car without loading up your back seat with subwoofers. Rod makes a sub setup that gets alot of good press. It's worth a call to him.

I enthusiastically second the recommendation for Rod Birch. Not only is he a very nice guy (he travelled 1 1/2 hours each way to install my system) he knows what he's talking about and you can trust him (IMHO).
His bass enclosure (the "System") is doubly effective b/c it adds bass in an unobtrusive location AND it relieves the midrange drivers of the load (and distortion) of attempting to reproduce frequencies lower than they can cleanly go.
The only "downside," such as it is, is you pay near retail for the stuff. I believe the premium is worth it for Rod's experience and commitment to the marque and to the sound.

Good luck.

Bob,

Add me to the list of Rod's satified customer's. You can count on Rod to give you his honest opinion of what will meet your needs. When conducting the installation on my Cab, Rod noticed that the speakers I already had were of better quality than the ones I had purchased from him. Instead of going ahead with the installation (I would not have known the difference), he suggested I keep the speakers I had and return the ones I'd bought from him for a refund, which I did. I sincerely appreciated his action and honesty. By the way there is no problem what so ever in hearing the stereo at speed

I was just looking at something for a '89 C4. To my ear, the recievers all sound the same. I picked a Blauplunk because they made the only unit that didn't have all sorts of neon colors and chrome swoops. I had gone one step up from the base CD model to get 25 RMS watts, crutchfield has this unit for about $175.

At my local shop - here I'm more picky and like to buy from someone who can let me hear the speakers - I had a limited selection in the required sizes - Alpine, Boston Accustics and JBL. The rear 4"x6"'s were pretty good in the BA, and poor in both other brands. They cost about $65 for the pair. The matching BA's for the front (5.25") were about $85 and sounded good as well.

Ends up that I never bought this particular car, and if I had, I'd probably research the speakers a little more, but I think I would have been happy with this combination considering the price point.

When purchasing your receiver/cd player, do you have to buy any special shock protection or memory buffer to handle the rough ride when playing cd's to prevent skipping?

JonT:

Back in the beginning of CD audio in cars (late 80's?), skipping was pretty common, even on the expensive units.

Now, you can buy the cheapest Alpine (under $200) and it won't skip anywhere near the frequency of times the early units did. I've had 4 Alpine CD head units over the past 13 years and they have all gotten progressively better in reducing skipping. I can't remember the last time I had one of the newer indash CD players skip...

Yeah, the Car Audio Innovations setup is nice if you want to add depth to the sound, if you need something extra kicking I'm gonna try to build a box when I get the car back (broken head stud, decided i wasn't competant enough to fix it so i sent the car out.....you can search for my old posts regarding it if you're real interested) that will comprise of two 10" subs as I listen to quite a bit of modern rap/ r&b and I enjoy bumpin' audio systems, I'll let you all know how it goes. You should also consider changing the speakers on the rear shelf since they're probably baked from being under the sun for all those years......a head unit switch to a Blaupunkt Hamburg or something compatible for tapes wouldn't be a bad idea either. Whatever you do, i suggest you do not go with crutchfield as they're ridiculously overpriced. BTW, add me to the Rod Birch props list....I have emailed with him back and forth in the way past without buying anything and he was helpful and full of advice.

later,
