I think that is pretty harsh. None of the regular posters here takes this as our opportunity to guide anyone's life. There are a number of opinions offered up usually, and I believe most people asking take it all with a grain of salt. Your statement could apply to anyone here looking for tech advice. This is the Internet. As in life in general, if you seek counsel on any decision, the choice on whether to heed advice is your own.

BTW, I would consider Steve Weiner and Peter Z experts, and Steve did chime in here.

Therefore anything we say or do this remotely is purely speculation; and, 3) It's your money and your happiness. Does this item satisfy both for you?

I would recommend you go and get a thorough PPI done by a reputable shop in your area, A couple of hundred now may save you thousands later. Thoroughly review the maintenance and upkeep records. Assure yourself the car has been well maintained. Make sure everything works, if something doesn't work, get estimates on its cost to repair and put that in the offer. Ask the board if there is a current owner of a like model and year that is near enough that, if you would like, can actually go out and check out the car with you. The cost of a lunch or dinner will probably be sufficient compensation for someone to take time his to come assist you. Then you can make a decision on substanative data and not a lot of conjecture or opinion, and a friend that you can ask questions and build your own base of Porsche knowledge. I'm really sorry, I must be tired and grumpy tonight, but I wouldn't want to gamble thousands of dollars on my "dream" and then find out I bought a problem, or missed out on a really great, solid car based on a bunch of generalizations and opinion. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I want to see someone name their kid "Man O War" or some cool name like that. Or something really off the wall like Fromberg. Fromberg Wilkerstein the Third.

This car is probably priced appropriately. IMO anyway. You can buy a ****tty G-50 car for 10k like I did and then put 10k into it and still not have much to show for it. At 15k, I think its mileage and lack of documents are not an issue if the PPI comes back ok and its drives nicely. Check the tires. Check the AC--look at how much you are going to want to spend on it after you get it--then determine if you should just continue your search, or whether those things balance out with the price.

BTW my car is for sale. But as I said, I don't have much to show for it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...river-20k.html

I appreciate all of the feedback.

Here were the last leakdown test results from 8/08/08 from the last major service. This was performed here by Franz Blan Racing so they are reputable.

1-11%
2-11%
3-8%
4-9%
5-10%
6-11%

Is this good, bad, ugly?

The seller is an enthusiast and has not given me any BS and has been straight up on everything so I have confidence there.

On another note I spoke with another Rennlist member that may be selling his killer 1991 C4. It has 68k on the clock and this car needs nothing. Most rubber, new clutch, awesome upgrades, etc. The downside is he is asking a premium because it is a premium car. The disadvantage is it is in Seattle and I have never driven a C4.

I want to apologize to the OP and forum for what I wrote yesterday in response to this thread. The only alibi I have to offer is yesterday was just one of those days where i was running on too little sleep, too much caffene, and too much frustration about a significant issue at work. I tried to relax by reading the forums for five minutes to recharge a little bit and the first thread I open is someone else asking "what I should do," after decisions and direction had been formerly issued to the team and statused on a regular basis for months. Doesn't excuse my response to a legitimate question from a first-time buyer. I've always tried to be helpful and contribute when I think I have something of value to add to the topic, and not waste the band-width when I don't. There is a lot of talent and expertise on this board and I have learned a lot too. I will try and be a more positive contributor in the future.

The disadvantage is that it is a 964 C4.

Ivan thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it. What does a top in rebuild go for now days and are those poor numbers a guarantee that it needs a rebuild?

Sf no apology needed. I frequent this forum because I get straight answers.

I wouldnt know, but IF it needs the top end done and IF you have it done at a good shop I would bet north of $6k ??? just a wild a$$ guess could be higher I suppose...

I spoke with the shop that did the maintenance and leakdown. They said those were good numbers and tested were tested on a cold engine.

They said a thorough PPI will run me $500 imputing new valve gaskets. The shop also said at that mileage they would do a full rebuild for $10 - $12k.

I plan to go for another test drive this weekend

An attractive car in Georgia, a 911 with working AC. Worth quite a bit right there...

I was able to take a long 2nd test drive today. I got a better feel for the car and really enjoyed the driving experience. The only issue I could see is it puffs a little white smoke on startup but goes away after driving a block. It has also been sitting since last week.

The clutch took a little getting used too but felt smooth and did not slip. Overall the entire car felt tight but had a very slight wheel vibration driving 80+ mph.

We struck a deal and if all goes well with the PPI this week I will officially become a Rennlist member. It will be about time since I have been a consistent lurker since 2004.

Better pics from today even after the rain....
