Question Cheap Mechanic Attacks Again

Hi everyone. Long time...

My friend with the 87' Carrera took the car again to the same cheap mechanic who tried to fix the tranny. He sent it again to change an axle oil seal on the transmission. I said "well, that shouldn't be a problem for the guy".

Anyways due to the "While they are there" factor they decided to change the head cover gasket and found 1 broken stud. He calls me up and I said if its only one...LEAVE IT ALONE!

So here they went...to make the long story short the guy takes off the heads (they didnt open up the block), changed studs, assembled and he did not put the timing right!! Started up and bent valves. Again took heads off, refurbished and assembled.

Bottom line, my friend calls me up asking to hear the car due to a weird sound when they test the car. So I went.

The sound is a hard pinging coming from the whole center of the engine block. It does not come from the heads. It sound like a really bad bearing on the crank. Is there a typical step gone bad (most probably) that may cause this noise without being a bad bearing or something mayor. For example an engine stud gone too far in that hits something? A loose oil pump due to the removal of the timing chain? I dont know.

Any heads up is appreciate. Just asking before the engine is taken apart again.

His mechanic isn't "cheap," he's an idiot! That said, if the pistons hit the valves hard enough, it could have bent a connecting rod, maybe damaged a rod bearing, maybe damaged a piston/wrist pin/wrist pin bushing. Doesn't sound good!

That is a sad story

Can he bring it to another shop and drag the original mechanic to court for creating the mess?

I knew a fellow from Puerto Rico. He was a fabulous Porsche enthusiast, and in spite of an old 912 that was pretty rough, was quite knowledgable about the marque - especially 356 and early 911. Well, he told me that the highest concentration of Ruf cars in North America were in PR. I didn't doubt him. Anyway, this leads me to believe that there should be some good tech support there.
Good luck.
